...have already axchanged emails with Anna (comes across as SUCH a lovely lady!) at RUF and they currently do a supercharger conversion for €15,500 plus €5,700 for a new engine! (as mine has >80k km on the clock). See extract of document from RUF:

...The compressor kit contains a centrifugal compressor, which is driven mechanically by a Poly-Rip belt. The maximum boost is 0,5 bar; the fuel pressure remains standard. The engine receives a new intake manifold, modified injectors, sports catalytic converters and a modified electronic engine management. The watercooled intercooler has a cooling water circuit with an electric water pump from the water cooler in the front spoiler.

The 3.4 liter engine has a performance of 360 bhp (265 kW) and a torque of 400 Nm; the 3.6 liter engine has 380 bhp (279 kW) and 420 Nm. The supercharged 3.8 liter engine of the 997 Carrera S provides 415 bhp (305 kW) and 440 Nm torque.

996 Carrera 3.4 liter with RUF compressor – acceleration: 0 – 62 mph (0 – 100 km/h)
in 4.7 sec., 0 – 125 mph (0 – 200 km/h) in 15.8 sec. Maximum speed: 187,5 mph
(300 km/h).

The Compressor Kit fits to all 996 and 997 Carrera with rear- or four wheel drive, including manual gear box or tiptronic S...

RUF offer a 2 year warranty on their product. Seems like a fairly cost-effective way to gain discrete performance (can't stretch to a Turbo and don't like the styling of the 997s anyway).

Opinions?

There are lots of 98 model 996 with high mileage in Germany for 30,000 Euro.

Grabbing one and having RUF putting in a new engine and compressor for 23,000 total seems to be something to look at !

I dunno. That's about 14 grand sterling. Good as Ruf are, you wouldn't get that back at re-sale. You may even narrow the market for your car.

Why not get a GT3?

If you are intending to keep the car for a while then it could make sense though.

We are currently fine tuning our supercharged 996 C4S that is putting down 450bhp at the tyres, or around 500bhp at the flywheel at 6.5-7psi, so Ruf's estimate of 360-415 bhp flywheel on 5psi seems a little on the conservative side.

Thats how we do things, we dont overstate bhp figures.

This kit has taken 2 years of R&D, and is well proven and very reliable.

...thanks for all the responses! The reason I'd go down the RUF route (if I did supercharge) is the R&D that goes into their products. They have an enviable reputation to protect afterall!

A GT3 is a bit too track focused for me - don't really want a roll-cage.

Comfort spec doesn't have a roll cage as default. Just ask Sam who's gutted that his doesn't now! (maybe you could take his off his hands and he could get the track spec he now wants!)

...don't think Chris is after the conversion - it's me (Jason!) I'm seriously thinking of popping over to RUF to investigate the SC, but do you have a tiptronic supercharged yet?

How does the character of the car change? Does it FEEL significantly faster?

Enjoy yourself as RUF Adam!

Adam - I actually pass quite close when I'm on business trips to Germany and usually take the Porsche. I might just pop in and say hello one day, albeit if my wife gets wind of it she will freeze our bank accounts

A coffee might be nice though - Just normal, not supercharged or modified in any way

Hi Jason!

Sorry about the mix up

We dont have a tip kompressor car yet unfortunately.

I can give you my impressions of the Kompressor car.

Basically, it is another level above the stock NA engine. The part i really liked was going through town in 6(!) and then at 60kmh putting my foot down and feeling linear no fuss acceleration from very low rpm.

Also the sound was superb. With this Kompressor you dont get any whining supercharger sounds(they can sound like a cat being strangled imho)

With this conversion you get instantaneous response. Furthermore it is a very efficent package, we dont loose much horsepower either.

Drop us a line with the email above, you are more than welcome anytime!
