All quiet on the 997 front?

All you new 997 owners out there ...how's it going..have you stopped grinning yet? What options did you specify..were they worth it? Any oil leaks..?
Come on chaps, dig the dirt!!
...there's a pretty active 997 forum on Rennlist. See attched URL. There have already been a few engine failures and RMS leaks! All points to the 997 being little more than a glorified facelift of the 996 as the 997 engine is fundamentally the same!
Also, I test drove a 997 recently and I am sure that there is a smidgeon more involvement from my 996 C4 (which has the sports suspension).

My 997S with the -20mm suspension is awesome. Trackdays, trips to Italy, it takes it all in its stride and makes me smile hugely.
It is even scarily fast in a straight line as the owner of a 996 Turbo found out yesterday when he decided to leave me behind on a couple of straights. Unfortunately for him I was ready to play and he couldn't get me off his back bumper, which shows how in the real world performance figures can be very misleading.

(Trying not to get angry). I've owned two 996s and picked up my long awaited 997 on Friday. Ultimately the 997 is a development of the 996, it's still a 911, but to assess it in such a negative way doesn't represent what a complete car the 997 is. Particularly when comparing it to a 996.
I agree with most that Porsche has not pushed the design enough. Incidently I parked my 996 cab next to an identical (colour and cab) 997 yesterday and seeing them side-by-side I think you can almost say that the 997 is a facelift rather than a new model. For the non Porsche enthusiast he/she will not be able to spot the difference between the two models once the "new" car hype of the 997 has worn off and what's more important it did not really make me wanting to change.

Didn't i read somewhere that the only external panel shared between 996 and 997 is the roof?
Don't suppose that's true on the cab though
I think the 997 looks like the 996 should have looked when it came out.
If an alien came to earth and saw a brand new 993, 996 and 997 next to each other, i reckon he'd think the 993 was the oldest, then the 997, then the 996.
Evolutionary changes....

I reckon I've bought a different 997 to the ones you've seen.

I must admit that I opened this post to find out what they were like day-to-day....mpg, handling, engine noise, you know - all that kind of PISTONHEADS stuff...but hey-ho
Fair point, here goes.
I spec'd the Sport Chrono pack and the sports exhaust which I now think should be standard in the S. I never drive the car without the sport button pressed, and without the exhaust I think it sounds a little ordinary unless you're on full chat.
I only ever use PASM on very smooth, new roads the front end of the 997 is nervous without it, switched on it's sweaty palm time. I've gone through 3.2/964/993/996 and this is the first 911 I've known which has such a tendancy to understeer. Initially I was a little disturbed by it, but the grip at the back is so phenomenally good (and I mean in a different league to a 996) that you just live with it. John Francas (Total 911) told me yesterday that out of the box the 997 does this, but after a 2k miles Porsche offer to re-align the car FOC and it sorts the understeer out. If anyone knows any specifics about this I'd be really grateful for the information.
Performance is significantly improved, it's so immediate and the engine revs so quickly you go through the gears and meet big numbers rapidly.
I use the car as an everyday workhorse, and at the moment it feels like I'm mowing the lawn in an Armani suit. After four days I've already kerbed a wheel in a car park (t**t) scratched the door, scuffed the leather, etc. I'm not joking!
For further reference the June edition of 911&PW has an article about living with a Carrera S, and it is absolutely spot on. I've had a similar experience to the journalist, going into a bend to quick and thinking, he we go...field and the car just going round without any drama. It's like no 911 I've ever had.
To some it up the only way this car will leave my possession would be a financial disaster in business. The turbo 3.6 would go first, then the X5, then the house, then the missus, then the kids. The bailiff that gets the job of taking it from me had better be good at his job.

Simon, just before people call me a fool, what I said is I read on a forum tha Porsche do this...it may well be Porsch ein the US...after all most OPC places don't bend over to help after they have your money....
re: "out of the box does this", again its just comments I have from a few 997 owners (as well as GT3 owners), that as supplied the alignment is not always spot on.
Just wanted to clarify that, as I don't want to give the impression that I think 997's all understeer and are twitchy out of the box!
Pheww, that was a long post!

So you like it then Simon?

Thanks VS, yes I love it.
It reminds me of the emotions that I experienced with my first 911. Those feelings of "Oh god I'm actually in this car" that I didn't get as much with the ones in between.
Before I collected the car I wondered if I might be stretching myself financially, since buying it I don't care (as with my first one). If need be I'll make the finance payments with credit cards rather than lose this truly awesome machine. It's almost as if I've got something so good, that other comforts (such as not being overdrawn) can be happily sacrificed if necessary.
Bloody hell I really like this car.
