I’ve been quoted £675 for a “major” service by an independent Porsche garage. They are doing the pre-purchase inspection and subject to a satisfactory result I need it serviced before I make the 3hr drive home as it’s due.

Note: I’m buying car (2003 996 C2 coupe) from another local car dealer.

Seems a lot of corn based on my research of other indi service rates.

Thanks

I’m wondering why the “” around the word major. Is it due a major service? Also what is the mileage, and is the inspection (and VAT) included in the price? If so then that doesn’t sound unreasonable to me?

depends what a major means as in Porsche circles it just means double the price for an oil change, As they don't do, belts, plugs, air filter, brake fluid etc in with the price !

My local indi charges £312 for a major service on a 996 C2, incl. VAT. I wonder if that price includes other stuff, which may need to be replaced at that mileage outside of the major service cost - for example, maybe break fluid change, plugs, or whatever else there may be?

All depends on what is and isn't included under the 'major' heading!

This might help https://www.rsjsportscars.co.uk/services/porsche_s...

Price soon ticks up when you start talking spark plugs, belts etc....

Inspection isn’t included that’s £110+vat (no boroscope or paint depth etc). Car has done 80k and according to service history hasn’t had a major service with plugs since 2007 and 50k miles but has had five minors due I guess to having done under 9k per annum. Last service was 2016 @66700miles. So yes it definitely needs a major service.

I will ask what their service includes I would hope it includes brake fluid and even gearbox oil for that amount. I have confirmed spark plugs are included.

I’m surprised it hasn’t had a major service since 2009. That’s a long gap. If the garage are aware of the gap in major servicing I would imagine they’re looking at renewing quite a lot of things. I think it’s probably a good idea to find out what exactly they’re looking at doing, especially if you want to shop around for comparisons. Also, have a look at the Porsche servicing schedule for your car at that mileage. Again that would give you some idea.

1/2 the price of an OPC then.

Iv'e not enquired with my local OPC yet but I understand from other thread discussions that as 996's now come under "Porsche Classic" the charges are less?! probably not 50% less though!

It’s ok, but unless they’ve been done recently I’d be getting the gearbox oil and coolant changed on top. What about the air con too?

In my experience it costs £1000 for all the fluids filters and a service and inspection on a 996.

If it hasn’t had a major for sometime I would be putting aside £1500 to cover any nasties that are uncovered. These cars can drain the wallet fast. Plus, if your brakes and pads need replacing that will add another grand. I have a major coming up shortly with a reasonably-priced indie. With new discs and pads all round I’m looking at around £2500 (inc VAT), and that’s before other bits are uncovered that need looking at.

Wise advice indeed.

£650 for the service they have quoted is a good a price. It's the other things they find when doing the service that often means that the bill is much bigger.

I had a service carried out on my family workhorse (Skoda Octavia VRS estate) a couple of weeks ago. When it came to paying the guy handed over the bill rather apologetically. The total came to £375, inc VAT. I’m sure he was wondering why I was smiling so much.

Yes agreed, I am inclined to get coolant and gearbox oil changed as well.

The air con rads are toast so have budgeted around £700 for that with re-gas

My indie told me gearbox oil change is due at 90 or 95k (can't remember which) which for mine meant last years service.
