Looking at 996TT for sale at OPC sthere seems to be more Tips than manual boxes, is there a reason for this or is it just by chance ? i.e is the Tip box a more common option on the turbo than other 996s

Basicaly I am asking which is best for the turbo?

Thanks

Manual !
Although been commuting to Richmond recently in heavy traffic & wouldn't mind a Tip....but thats the only time I would prefer one, in heavy traffic.
I had a Tip Boxster S & now have a Manual 996 TT, so not really a good comparison but I felt the Tip robbed the car of something special. Also robbed the car of a little acceleration, though prob wont notice it in a Turbo.
If you do a lot of town driving through stop start traffic go for a Tip, otherwise manual.

In my opinion it really depends on where you want to use it. Ideally I think a manual is always better. However if you drive a lot in London or - as me - have trouble finding room for your left leg between the gearleaver and the steering wheel, then I think tips is the right answer. With the normal 996 I always find myself in the wrong gear and it shifts up into 5th to quickly so I use the manual override. The turbo has much more torque and I find it works much better with the tips.

Its got to be a manual and when its a manual its got to be

Manual with short shift kit every time! If you want to explore the extremities of the car

I live in London and as all ready said, only when in long heavy traffic is when u want a Tip - I live with it thou and wouldn't change.

It is a modified gear lever/linkage that reduces the travel of the lever when changing gear, for faster changes (with perhaps a little more effort).

I'd like to fit one but I can't find one for an AWD 993....

I've seen discussion about these fitted on 993TTs on the Rennlist forums, so they do exist. They use the factory RS kit, though you need to make a bit of room with a hammer apparetnly, I quote:

"I believe that FVD markets the Factory RS short-shift kit. This is a very simple piece, but requires that you "dimple" the cover underneath the car. "Dimple" is a nice way of saying "whack it with a hammer" until it can accomodate the longer part of the new shifter.

If you fit one, report back and let me know what you think - I might do the same...

Thanks for the info, Niels. I will follow it up.
