I've got my eye on a couple of cars for sale at a local deally. I'm not fully clued up on long term issues or valuations but that's what I'm here for! Any idea which would hold it's value better?

Can’t really comment on the price, but before you commit to a 996 C4s make sure you’re happy with how it drives.

I had a 996 C4s and although it was fun for the first couple of weeks, with mega pose value (it was 6 months old when I got it) I soon became tired of its harsh ride and somehow “heavy” feeling. Compared with the Boxster S I’d just come out of, it wasn’t nearly as much fun.

Then I got to do a track day, one of the cars was a 996 s , the RWD version. What a revaluation that car was, it felt fantastic and underlined that, for me, I’d bought the wrong car. This was reinforced on the journey back in my C4s.

So not long after, the C4s was gone.

I’m sure other will sing the praises of the C4s but for me, it wasn’t right but the C2 would have been.

Good luck with your search

Both are tiptronics so there's no great demand for them. I liked my old boxster tiptronic but accept that older Porsches with manual geaboxes are much more sort after. Therefore I'd say that these two are priced on the high side. You won't lose your shirt but you shouldn't expect to get back what you've paid come resale time.

I'll keep that in mind, I haven't test driven any so going purely off of looks and what I can afford. I definitely don't want anything that is uncomfortable as it'll be my daily driver.. my gf needs to be happy too!

Ok so in that case I guess I should aim for something a bit cheaper privately. I just want something a bit more interesting than a typical leased Saloon until everything goes electric!

+1 on avoiding the tip and getting a manual

also coupes more desirable than cabs

also that cab is not a C4S - its a C4 (with tiptronic S)

C4S is a lot more desirable than C4 - it has the sexy wide arse, with turbo suspension, brakes, wheels and front/rear bumpers

The second car linked above looks nice and reasonably priced.

I paid only a tick less for mine in May of last year, but with 106k miles on the clock. Nice spec, manual/coupe, immaculate. However I bought from a dealer (911V) as wanted the safety of a warranty (which turned out to be a very good decision as the cylinder head cracked 3 months in).

Good luck, enjoy, and do your homework

All 996 are as comfortable as each other depending on their suspension setup. Standard suspension or slightly lowered MO30 or all sorts of after market alternatives beyond that.

I chose a very early c2 because the earlier 3.4 engine is a bit less fragile and the early cars are simpler and lighter. I use 17 inch wheels on mine which changes the ride and feel.

Nice but £20k is manual coupe money, I guess the warranty if provided is worth something

Thanks guys, I'm actually thinking that maybe a pdk cayman might be a better bet for me as manuals are not an option. I can see Gen2s with PDK for around £17/18k and Boxsters for £15k.

I'll probably start a new thread when I've done some more research but something like this should be relatively trouble free right? I should probably start a new thread!

Yes

I think the 2.9 looks cheap and still has almost identical power and performance figures to an original 986 3.2s which seemed fine when I had one.

To ask for value on here is reasonable, but always the discussion ends up with opinions. The only way to decide is to try them, I have had a 996 and three 997's both 2wd and awd. I prefer the awd especially the gen 2 997 but in the final analysis it's your opinion that matters. The 911 has a presence and practicality lacking in Boxters and Caymans. Portiacraft in my experience are good to deal with and usually very competitive.

is it on PH? unless it was intergalactic miles or tip I should have found it (I was trying to found manual C4S under 100k for around £20k)

You'll miss the space and practicality if you get a Boxster or a Cayman, I need to sell my 986 because it's too damn small! E.g you can not simply throw a coat on the back seat, shopping involves bonnet opening procedure, door must be open to release bonnet etc.. Small but gets annoying when it's a daily. And as above the 911 has oh so much more presence.

Not true.

My 986.2 had buttons on the key for boot and front boot.

The Cayman has a shelf though right? That'll do a coat I'd guess!

Just a button on the key to open the front boot. I found my cayman very practical as it's got two boots and a parcel shelf. Admittedly if you're needing a family car with rear seats there's no option but a 911.

Dunc.

It's a tip so that will be why. 80k miles C4S Aero and not far off your budget smile
