The recent pub talk thread got me thinking… as I’ve never driven on track but lots of people here have… so take a break and humour me

Around a track, say Castle Combe or any others that people have had experience on, with a half decent driver and a good example of each of the following cars, which would post the quickest times?

968 CS M030
944 Turbo M030
Carrera 3.2
930 Turbo

Thanks

I would be fastest in the 968 but that's because I'm not very good and it really is a very forgiving car. I am back in 911's now but the confidennceI had in the CS was fantastic.

I am guessing the 944t would be quickest in the right hands on the principle it will be as good as the CS in the corners if its MO30, should brake the same and will have a lot more power for the staight bits. I know the numbers are about the same but the turbo feels a lot faster and develops more torque. It will lose out on slow corners though unless the driver can keep it on boost you exit a walking pace.

Now my 993 has a supercharger and having driven this a bit I would bet a supercharged 968CS would beat the others by miles - and lots of other stuff too for that matter

James, you coming to the ACE or the June PH meet?

Hmmm, 993 C2 should mix it pretty well with the 944T and 968CS, but i reckon the 968 would still be outright winner in "average" hands.

964 would probably not be far behind, but my 993C4S toasted a mate's 964 C4 at Imola a couple of years back. Lost him in half a lap (3.1 miles a lap fyi).

I once raced a 993TT in a really good 964. I gave it EVERYTHING and he was like a lion playing with a mouse. A formidible car.

I'll throw some quantifiable numbers into the pot

Back in 1999 was the last time that the Porsche Cup raced at Castle Combe with both a 944T and a 968CS entered. In road trim the 968CS is 65kg lighter than the 944T and they have 240bhp and 250bhp respectively. Annoyingly I cannot find the weight limits for the 1999 Porsche Cup but I know the engines had to be standard and were often dyno tested by the scrutineers.

Anyway the 944T driven by Chris Heeley finished in 4th place with a best lap of 1:16.26

The 968CS driven by Piers Maserati finshed 13th with a best lap of 1:18:07

Edited to add some more cars in our pub list:

Godfrey Jones came 3rd in a 993 with a best lap of 1:15:38

Adrian Grieves came 8th in a 964 with a best lap of 1:18:34

Clive Bailey came 15th in a 3.2 Carrera with a best lap of 1:20:67
