You've got me thinking now.
Bolt on supercharger, no internal engine mods, 434 bhp...![]()
Is this the answer for someone who finds his C4 slow compared to his supercharged XJR?
do it do it do it do it do it!
C4 schmee4 slow rubbish. you want 434 bhp...
go on go on go on
sorry it's a slow day at work today

]didn't you also do an SC with the EVO MS centrifugal SC?
How did that go? Looks like a slightly better engineered solution, though I expect the power delivery may differ between the roots and the centrifugal blower.
0n a 3.6 C4S the centrifugal VF kit is making 450bhp at the tyres / 498bhp at the flywheel.
Downside to centrifugal is lower bottom end torque. Upside is greater efficiency at top end. Due to larger injectors in this kit the factory mpg meter & range (if fitted) goes haywire, otherwise no problems.
Both kits are a bit of a bugger to fit so expect a fair cost for installation (which we cannot do on a fixed price due to the idiosyncracies of the kits). Unfortunately we can guarantee the kit and the results but we cannot guarantee the engine (for the obvious well-documanted 996 engine related issues) after the kit is fitted.

...that's why the RUF supercharger kit is an option - more expensive, but it's a fixed price and the engine post conversion is guaranteed for 2 years.

Hey, I would guarantee an engine if I had just done a full engine rebuild on it (and charged £20k ).....
No offence, but only a blithering idiot with a bancrupcy wish would guarantee your average, not rebuilt, 50,000 mile standard 996 engine for 2 years, let alone after squeezing more power out of it. Even the main dealers are squeeling with delight when the cars drop out of warranty.
The simplified way that you have summarised the deal makes me out to be asking customers to write an open cheque for a blown up engine. The reality is that 9m have always ended up doing the last 10% of the development on any product we buy in, usually within the price of the job and always at our cost. Finally we have wised up, so we now give the customer the option of the extra costs & he decides if he wants it doing & is willing to pay for it.
In any case, rather than charge a fixed price of £2000, I would prefer to charge as required and give the customer the option of paying £1600 should the job takes less than anticipated. Fixed price deals are ok for us if we are doing 4 cars a week, but with these near one-off conversions it is impossible to get enough practise and do a 50 hour job in 30 hours.
That said, the new 9m 968 Supercharger that we are just finishing off is now a completely in-house designed and developed conversion (like the 964RS Motec packages) and thus will be offered at a fixed price because we are in complete control of the whole package & parts.
Sorry to react strongly, but I could make a good living charging £20k for a £10k job, there's plenty of meat there to cover the odd stuffed engine.

Im SO looking forward to seeing that 968 / 944 SC conversion....
Got to grips with the kit on our 968CS yesterday. The supercharger is now in place on the production mounting, the new radiator/intercooler assembly is in place (wait till you get a load of this!) and the larger injectors are fitted. Most of the pipework is complete, we just have the supercharger oil cooler & recir pipework to do, fit the new AFM & then it's onto the rollers for mapping. Trackday at Ty Croes on Friday, so it is going to be a busy week.

...the cost is actually Euros 15,500 (incl. engine mods) for car with 50k miles on the clock or less. That equates to about £11k. Not bad for the performance hike and the 2 year guarantee.
For cars over 50k miles, RUF supply and fit a NEW (not reconditioned) engine from Porsche for about £4k.

Well, at least Ruf agree with me regarding the quality and lifespan of a 996 engine, although the price of the same engine in the UK is £6700+VAT.
At £11k their conversion is not too expensive (for Ruf) for a reasonable power increase. The VF engineering conversion that we do works out at approximately £8000+VAT for around +150bhp.
I've had sleepless nighs all weekend!
I'm seriously interested, but there must be risks involved. Can a standard 3.4L 996 NA engine really handle 434bhp unmodified?
I think I'm right in saying that the 996 TT is a different engine. Was this to cope with 450bhp (plus) as the standard engine couldn't?

Good question. The standard engine in perfect condition can cope with it. However be aware that if the engine is not perfect and is carrying faults, with the supercharger fitted it will find them more quickly, hence why Ruf recommend an exchange engine first.
VF warranty their conversion, but without reading the fine print I would guess that it excludes engine faults not specifically caused by the blower conversion, so if it cracks a liner it is not down to them (my opinion, may be wrong!).
