That's quite a pretty car - not unlike the 993, in fact. It looks as though the overall dimensions would be very similar, too. But is there really room for yet another version of the Porsche marque in this shape? Who would be the usual market for this car? Would the Boxster fans prefer this, or are we talking about would-be 997 buyers who can't quite afford the full prices?

...cynical product positioning from Porsche - as the Cayman is really just a hard-top version of the Boxster. It's being priced (overpriced IMO) close to 911 money to make sure 997 sales are not adversely affected.

I'm sure it will be an outstanding 2-seater sports car, but it has to be VERY special to justify the price hike over the standard Boxster S.

I think that the unbroken (a la 911) line between the roof and rear deck looked great on the preview pics, but looking at the official pics of the silver car they seem to have bottled out and removed it for fear that it apes the 911 a little too much.

However, the car that's pictured here - http://www3.porsche.com/cayman/pcgb.asp - also an official pic, seems to have small buttresses that give the impression of a seemless 'swoop' from roof to rear deck when viewed from the side - strange.

The two cars look different - which is the true representation (or am I seeing something that isn't there?)

What I wonder is that RUF / Gemballa et al will very quickly put seriosuly tuned engines in assuming the chassis can handle it and there is no reason to assume otherwise, are they from a more longer term point of view going to damage the 911 credibility as their ultimate driving car? (CGT aside of course )

For me it makes me wonder what direction Porsche are taking themselves in?
