Hello all,

Sorry to put this in general Porsche.

Dropped the car off at a German Porsche specialist yesterday, and asked them to carry out a full service including changing gearbox oil.

Received a call from their mech, who put me through to their boss, stating they had found 'a little problem'. Some chunky swarf and an entire diff carrier bearing magnetised to the drain plug!

I am naturally suspicious of such things being a potential upsell.

Attached is the pic, is this even possible?! The 'box has never given any problems, and there has been no whining from the diff.

Cheers

Matt

Well the swarf I could maybe understand not cleaning off the magnet.

The actual carrier bearing attached to the top, I could not.

I've asked them just to take the diff off and take pics, it should clearly be missing the bearing!

We shall see.

So... explaination is in.

Its not a diff carrier bearing, its a 6x14mm gear locking pin.

It is apparently evident that the 'box has been out before, and this unit has either been left loose in the 'box during reassembly, or its actually been poorly fixed and worked its way out.

Without it properly affixed you're at risk of 2 gears trying to drive at once, is the explaination I was given, which would lunch the box.

Long and short of it is the box is coming out for inspection, and to do that, the engine is coming with it.

My silver lining is that I wanted to get the 'Mezger water pipes of doom' fix done, as the last thing I want is a catastrophic coolant loss under load, somewhere like the 'ring, which might actually endanger somebody else's life. This gives me the impetus needed to just get it done almost free of additional charge.

I've asked them to document with pics.

As for which specialist - I'll PM you.
