Is this still a thing?

Has anyone collected from the factory recently-if so can you share the experience and what is involved?

Thanks

Think it may depend on which factory but the OPC will direct you to liaise directly with Porsche Germany I believe

I was wondering about this the other week when I was at the Factory, a few years ago when I was admin of SEAT Leon owners club I tried to get SEAT UK to arrange for me to pick up my new Cupra from Martorell and they said it wasn't possible as car needed to be in the UK before its registered.

How do Porsche, Mercedes etc get round that then?

I think it gets registered in Germany first, then re-registered in the UK? I'm sure I've seen threads where people say they kept their original German plates.

Surely that means you have to take it out of the country every few months? sure I read a rule a few months ago that if your working in this country the car is supposed to be re-registered in 2 weeks.

As cool as it would be to have a RHD Porsche on German plates.

He means they keep the physical metal/plastic German plates which were on the car when they drove it to the UK. The cars get a UK registration.

The car is issued with a temporary German registration plate that from memory has a defined life - perhaps 2 weeks. This registration allows you to drive the car to your hearts content for that period throughout Europe etc.

The collection package includes a flexiplus Eurostar ticket. You then take the car to the OPC you ordered it from. They give it the once over, register it in the UK and that’s it. And as somebody has said, you keep the German temporary plates as a memento.

I took my dad with me as it was his 70th. Really good trip - hotel, factory visit, lunch in factory restaurant, museum - and came back via track day at Spa. Very memorable trip.

Worth doing once.

As above replies really. I would thoroughly recommend as its ace, everyone should do it at least once in their Porsche ownership lifetime!

We booked our own flights, hotels and Eurostar back but they will push to do it all for you, but be aware you can choose.

You have ten days on German plates ( including insurance) where after you need to drop off at uk dealer for pdi and uk registration process and then Drive away

I have done it numerous times.( I live in Canada) - car comes with temp red-edged plates and is insured for the delivery period ( up to 3 months). Delivery includes a meal , hotel the night before, factory tour and tickets to the Porsche Museum

I believe they stopped it last year (for the UK at least) as the customer reception centre was built over with the Taycan factory building, I couldn’t get it when I tried. Might have started up again now.

It’s also difficult to get in the winter months, as German law requires winter tyres, so that would be an issue, as they’d have to give it you with those on and then supply normal tyres when back in the UK, massive pita for them.

I did it with my Mercedes AMG, Mercedes dont charge you, as you effectively deliver the car for them, they provide a flight, taxi to the hotel, decent hotel with good and drink paid for, and the flexi Chunnel ticket. You get a tour of the factory too. Very good service, only had to pay for the second flight for my friend.

Porsche charge something like £3-4K I was told!!!!!

I still have my German plates.

Which building did you collect it from? I drove there from MK the other week, via Stuttgart.

Modena not Maranello? I meant which building was the collection done from at the Ferrari factory, having spent the whole day wandering around the place was interested in which building is customer collection.

Sorry for the confusion. I drove the car out of these gates:-

That’s not my car though. They took lots of photo and sent me a nice leather bound album as a souvenir.

Very nice, stood outside of them gates the other week, Maranello is such a relaxed place, had a fair few beers with the locals on the Tuesday night, turns out it was labour day on the Wednesday so they were all out getting smashed haha.
