Time for a change
Discussion
I've finally decided that it's time to have a change around in my garage and that it's time to sell my 964 Cab that I've had for almost 19 years. I rarely drive it anymore (sub-500 miles a year) and find that I when I do drive it, am yearning after new cars and not the classics (I have a 991.1 GTS as a daily). So it's off to the garage for a service and MOT and then I'm going to SOR it to see what happens.
As such, I need to think about the short list of things to look at to replace it (which is where you guys come in !). At the moment, I've got these on my list of things to look at:
981 Spyder
991.1 GT3
997.1 or .2 GT3
Mclaren 650s
I've posted this on this forum, as I'm primarily a Porsche guy, but is there anything else worth considering either Porsche or non-Porsche ?
Cheers,
Richard

you will miss the 991.1 GTS engine, so picking a car sans x51 will be a backward step.
Keep the GTS add a 987.2 Spyder. I run both those and the 987.2 will give you the thrill a 964 gave you, a 981 Spyder not only lacks your GTS x51 engine, it also has eps like your GTS which really again a backward step from your 964.
Engine wise you have been spoilt with the x51 3.8, there is not much better out there.
A lotus of some sort also hits the mark if you are keeping the GTS.
But a 987.2 Spyder is like a proper built lotus imo, hence it’s kept me from revisiting the brand.
Bit of a last of an era car and wonderful to drive.

Hmmm... D has got a point there on the engine actually.
My perfect car would be a 981 Spyder, x51, electric roof, hydraulic steering, with a set of 2 way JZR touring passives, GT3lca And closer ratios on 19” wheels. Cannot even build one though :-(
Looking forward to a go in Chris W car, looks like that’s his car at Jens place on face book , 435bhp, full manthey passives and it looks like he has added monoball cup lca ends all round now as well, just needs those bbs wheels :-)
Yes you can do all that to a Spyder for >£25k spend ofcourse which if the entry prices keep dropping ie £55k then a nice project.

I've been a Porsche fan for many many years and had countless cars from them. Recently had the opportunity to go into another 911 but drove and bought a Mac 570S, couldn't go back now. Get a test drive and see what you think, the dealer's aren't as efficient as the German brands but the cars are epic and worth a bit of potential hassle.

Interesting option to look at the 987.2 Spyder, however think it may feel a little old-school (albeit with the upside of hydraulic steering), but will certainly seek one out to take a look at. Thanks for the tip, and nice to have you back on the forum.

I'd be tempted by a Spyder in your position, different enough from your 911 to feel special for weekends etc..
That, or a 997.2 GT3.
The Mac is a tempting prospect, the 650 Spider is a lot of car for similar money (warranty costs, depreciation etc aside).

Got to agree.... 981 Spyder would be the first option based on what you’ve written.
Get that nicely set up with a fast road geo...(maybe few parts to nicely key it in) and nice tyres MPS4S, job-jobbed.
Yes, I think the 981 Spyder is an interesting proposition - not quite got the 991.1 GTS engine, but nearly there !Get that nicely set up with a fast road geo...(maybe few parts to nicely key it in) and nice tyres MPS4S, job-jobbed.

Had a wander around a 570 about 18 months ago, but didn't take one for a test drive. A 12C was on my shortlist about 15 months ago, but wasn't convinced they'd hold their money and I knew reliability wasn't it's strongest suit, so, after an amazing test drive in a 991 GTS, I decided to stick with the Porsche brand.Looks like I could pick up a 570s or a 650s for similar money now, so would be rude not to go and see how they actually drive

As a current 981 Spyder owner it would be my first choice, however i also agree that a nice 987 Spyder would make a nice pairing and save some dosh in the deal..Taffy66 said:

Old school is good as no, PASM, no e-diff, no PTV, no pccd, no rws, no eps, etc etc

I've been admiring your procession of lovely 991's (loved the Oak Green GTS), but didn't know you had a spyder too. What is it about that car that keeps it in the garage whilst all manner of 991 GTS/GT3/GT3RS's plus inbound 992's are also taking up garage space ?
Thanks for your kind words..I'm fortunate as i have an extremely open mind on what constitutes a great car in my book..I like both NA and Turbo engines as well as Manual or PDK.As long as a car surpasses my expectations it gets a big thumbs up from me..I bought a 458 six months ago without having ever driven one, just on reputation and i love it..I've had my 981 Spyder over a year now after initially going to view a 911T..After seeing a Carrera white Spyder i drove it and bought it before the test drive was over..Its a simple old school roadster(EPAS apart) with passive dampers, best manual gearbox i've ever experienced . I also think its the best looking Porsche in recent times plus one of the rarest with only about 220 registered in the UK..Its also refreshingly lightweight by modern standards at 1315Kg which you really feel on the road..
I'll keep it until i get the 718 Spyder but only if that car appeals to me even more than my 981 Spyder.I'd still consider a 987 Spyder if the price and spec were right..

That's very kind of you to offer. Will be in touch in a couple of months - I'm backwards and forwards out of the country with work for the next month, then have some holidays lined up, so won't start my search properly until after the summer. Have got a 458 on the periphery of the list, but probably a bit more than I want to spend at the moment. Taffy66 said:

Yes, had a sit in a lovely white 981 spyder at Porsche Swindon, which is what got my attention in the first place (mate of mine was buying a 718 GTS at the time, so thought it would be rude not to survey all the nice things they had in the showroom !!) Taffy66 said:

I would also consider a 718 spyder, but am no where near as high up my OPC's Christmas card list as you are, so don't really have a chance of getting one of those brand new
