Well this is going to be rather annoying having to go to court due to sports exhaust triggering these detectors laugh

Let’s hope they’re set to catch those ridiculously noisy 2-stroke trail bikes rather than lovely sounding V12s!

And what happens when a car is fined despite having a standard exhaust system? Will the owner be able to pass the fine to the manufacturer?!

"Once a vehicle is in service, exhausts and silencers must by law be maintained in good working order and not altered to increase noise. "

Um, really? So all those great Akrapovic, Fabspeed, Larini, Tubi, Miltek, etc (the list goes on and on) products are illegal?

I might be in the minority here but... cracking down on anti-social behaviour from stupidly noisy exhausts, whether on scooters, motorcycles or cars, is no bad thing. We live on a crowded island and far too many people take the piss with the amount of noise their vehicles make. Whether this method will work in reality remains to be seen.

They changed the MOT test last year I believe to include tests on exhaust system....so until your car is three years old it’s not an issue. This came up on the GT3 RS thread recently because of the new GPF.

The real issue is if your car isn’t road legal (i.e. you’ve changed your exhaust to the extent that it would breach the MOT test) then most insurance policies are void. And we know insurance companies never look for a reason not top pay out !

From https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/m...

8.1.1 Noise suppression system
You must inspect:

exhaust silencers -
under-bonnet noise deadening material fitted as original equipment – you don't need to inspect this for Class 3 vehicles
You must use your judgement to assess exhaust noise:

during the emissions test for the vehicle -
rev the engine to around 2,500rpm or half the maximum engine speed if this is lower on vehicles not subject to an emissions test
Exhaust noise from the vehicle must not be unreasonably above the noise level you'd expect from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition.

Defect -- Category
Exhaust noise levels in excess of those permitted -- Major

So loads of room for interpretation!

Got to say I largely agree, especially after staying in a hotel for a week recently where the room was on a main road through a small Georgian village, noise pollution can be a real annoyance.

Fortunately home is in a small quiet close so don’t normally have the problem.

I love the sound of a great engine/exhaust as much as the next person but some at the loudest end of the scale are excessive and a maximum limit wouldn’t be a bad thing IMO. Glad to have a switchable option in PSE.

Interesting they are only proposing to issue fines, no points.

Obviously want to get several bites out of people's wallets whilst not putting them off the road.

Other parties won't be much better either. Self-serving politicians.

I got woken up last night by a motorcycle with a noisy exhaust, ripping around in a 30 limit at 3am. A £5,000 fine seems reasonable for a first offence, this morning.

Exactly this ^

I live in a reasonably quiet village, my other half lives in N.London, the amount of tw*ts driving around at ALL hours with stupidly noisy/anti social exhausts on their cars and motorcycles (especially born again bikers on "trendy" choppers) beggars belief. Quite frankly this is long overdue IF it happens and is properly enforced.

And yes, I am thinking of changing my PH username to Victor M

I find at a lot of classic events all these recreations have straight pipes, and are way too loud.

Classic in the castle went from a nice event to abso wkers reving straight piped cars.

Seems a thing atm but lambo owners seem the worst offenders.

yes

whenever I hear an offensively loud and unpleasant noise its a motorbike not a car

makes sense if they limit it to towns/city centres as opposed to enforcing it on country roads in the middle of nowhere (like they seem to do re speed limits). Am all for it, while I don't mind loud cars/bikes I have a lot of sympathy for people who do (ie the majority of the population) - just not necessary to drive a loud car at anything exceeding say 3k rpm in a city

Motorbikes do not have front number plates and so will not get caught by the suggested technology.
