Very first post...here goes!
Discussion
Hello all,
As the title says, first post- so please be gentle! I've been following PH, esp the Porsche forum for a while now.
I'm looking to buy my first Porsche and wondered if I could pick peoples brains here?
Basically, I've always been a petrol head (my Dad has the bug too!) I've wanted a porsche since I could say the word car and having finally finished my 6 year medicine course, I think it's about time I treated myself to one! :-) My questions...
1) 993 C2, 993 c4S with a budget of max 35k. Where would be the best place to start looking? Do OPCs get them in much. The one i've been in to in Northampton said they rarely see them. What about Autotrader? Any tips? I've read most of the other posts I could find on this topic.
2) Perhaps this should have been questions number one :-) but how easy is it going to be to get insurance on one of those at aged 23/24?? Anyone got any tips? Had my licence for almost 7 years, full NCB. I'd like to do some sort of advanced drivers course to make sure that I'm safe on the roads with it! Will this reduce the premium at all?
3) Reliability must be good as it will be my only car. Having had a Land Rover until now, anything will be an improvement, but does anyone have any particular horror stories or pitfalls to watch out for?
Any other pointers on where to start, what I should be looking for etc would be more than welcome.
Thanks very much for your time.
Cheers,
Aki
PS...Been revising for my finals a lot in a coffee shop on Whiteladies Road, Bristol - those of you who have thundered by in your 911's over the past few weeks- THANK YOU.. you've provided me with a lot of much needed motivation!

Firstly welcome,
I'd have thought that 35K could buy you a sparkly 993 c2 or c4s these days. Try 911Virgin for good competitive prices, or specialistcarsltd.co.uk for very shiny, clean ones. Use the web, young Luke, and shop around lots. I'd have thought you'd be outside the OPC by this stage of their lives.
Of course you will get insurance, but it will probably cost you. You may want to investigat the possibility of getting a cheaper Porker to prove experience of sports cars first, but that depends on the insurer.
Reliability. You know they are bulletproof, but they are getting on a bit now, and you wouldnt want to fit blues to it, for use in a medical emergency... SHould be OK for to and fro though..

There are lots of nice shiny 993s for sale in the PCGB magazine within your price range - you'd be spoiled for choice, though it does mean you should get a professional opinion on the car before you part with your money. A Google search for 993s will turn up lots of specialist dealers - I spent some time looking at various dealers' offers on the internet before I spotted the one I wanted in RSJSportscars' site. They're a reliable firm, usually with a good range of cars, including some nice 993s.
As for insurance, I'm afraid I've no advice other than to shop around - there's an enormous number of specialists, some of whom insure young drivers. Good luck - you are starting your Porsche life in the right bracket!

You have got a LOT of choice in that bracket. You could get an early 996 (much modern car, modern technology) a 993 (last of the air cooled - very cool) or even a really nice Boxster S (ultra brilliant handling, roof off summer motoring).
If I was getting a car to use *every day* for your budget I'd get the Boxster S. You'll get a much newer example - and everyday driveability.
But a 993 would be very, very cool. And the depreciation on it should be much lower than on anything else..

Hi All,
Really useful information. Thanks.
"You may want to investigat the possibility of getting a cheaper Porker to prove experience of sports cars first, but that depends on the insurer."
Although only been driving for 7 years, I have about 170,000 miles of experience, about 5,000 of which have been in my dad's various cars over the past few years eg sl55, cayenne turbo, m3csl etc. Never had an accident to boot. It's annoying that insurers will just look at your age and presume your inexperienced and that you're going to drive like a hoon! Oh btw, medics can't have blue lights, its a green one with no siren. Apparently it's not worth the trouble as no one knows what it means!
"Good luck - you are starting your Porsche life in the right bracket!"
Thanks! I presume you mean age bracket! My fiance is a medic too. We plan on starting a family in the next five or so years, so I'm hoping to make the most of it before that happens!
"Would you not fancy a 996 C4 with full Aero Kit by chance? not that I have one for sale or anything!!"
Err, could be persuaded if you accidentally give me the keys to your new turbo!!! Beautiful car btw, its my screensaver at the mo. Re the c4, can you email me some info and pictures? Thanks

I had thought of the boxster (have had a brief test drive) but there is something about the 911, particularly the 993...something special, iconic... I'm preaching to the converted really!
Thanks again to all for their help. Look forward to meeting some of you soon.
Cheers for now,
Aki

Aki,
I hope you have more success than i did.
When i was 4 months short of 25, i couldn't get insured an £8k of M5 would you believe? They wanted 2 years NCB (i had 7), 2 years license (again 7), and 25 years of age.
I had to let the car go in the end because i simply couldn't find anyone to insure me.
Other than that, welcome to "the gang", or as we have been called, the PH 993 owners club
You should come down to the Ace sometime (like tonight) or see if you can make it over to the PH meet at the end of June (see sticky).

As said above the Porsche Club GB magazine, Porsche Post has loads of adverts that would interest you.
Also, the monthly 911 and Porsche World, has a lot of ads, both private and trade. Additionally, you can buy past issues of 911 & PW in which you may be able to find buyers' guides of specific models. (and ads for pre-puchase inspections which is a good idea.)

Have you considered something a little older and going for a classic car insurance. Perhaps a 964 or even 3.2SC or 3.0. The 964 is very similer to a 993 in many respects, but offers a slightly more intensive drive than the 993. £20K will get you a very nice widebody (if your like the 4S you will like this) and all the money you save can be spend on a few mods to produce a car that will blow the doors of most 993. If this does not suit then blow the full £35K on a RS
