After having just recently taken delivery of my 996 c4 3.4 with 113K on the clock and driven with a lightish right foot ( for the time being!), I am curious about engine oil consumption. Let's say each tankful (of petrol) or say 230 miles, or multiples of same, how often would one expect to top up to max

I had a 3.4 996 over 9 years drove it from 34k to 98k usually hard driven with probably 20 track days included ..nil oil usage..oil changed yearly. Not saying this is normal but high oil consumption is not normal for a 996. Cheers.

They will use some between services, but not enough to drop below the minimum level between annual services.

My friends 993 for example used 500ml over a 1200 mile trip my 993 used 250ml over a 2.4K trip, yet mines covered 150K miles, his a mere 80K. So each engine is different on usage.

Porsche recommends a rebuild with the 993 engine when oil consumption is a litre per 1000 miles ...... I’d assume the kettles would be similar, so as long as your not burning anything like that per 1K miles then your good to go.

My 3.4 has done 178k, 120k of those in my possession, and it’s never needed any oil between annual services.

My 3.6 wouldn’t use anything between services with normal driving. On track I could use up to a litre depending on the track. As Cmoose says, any change in oil use is relevant.

Since getting mine at 91K miles in May 15, I've done 13K miles so approx 3K per year. It's a 1997 3.4 996 C2.

I'm a bit obsessed with keeping the oil at the upper level all the time and frequently top it up a little every couple of weeks, using nearly a full 1L bottle over the course of the year.

No leaks, not even a sweat/weap from the RMS and no smoke at start up, or when driving.

It's always used oil at this rate and with 104K on the clock the 1L to 3K miles ratio has been broadly maintained.

My 3.4 (barely run in, 120,000 miler) uses nothing between services, but it used quite a lot a few years ago when it had a leaky cam cover seal....

My 996 (early 3.4) never used any oil between services. I did about 18k miles during my 3 year ownership, including several track days and mainly B road driving. It was approaching 100k miles when I sold it (should have kept it!!)

I find it depends on the oil used too.

Much lower with the thicker Millers oil Hartech recommend vs the Porsche recommend Mobil1. I’m sure Hartech also told me that with the nikasil liners I’d see some oil usage and it’d never be nil.
