The final edition of "Porsche- Excellence was expected" by Karl Ludvigsen has just been released and arrived today. Substantially expanded and rewritten with much more info. I have just read the section about the attempt by Porsche to buy VW and how it backfired and sampled some of the earlier volumes.

I have a Porsche library, and this will replace the older edition, - it is simply brilliant. Covers up to the test mules of the Taycan, and based on the sections relating to cars I own it is very insightful.

This replaces the older three volume set shown below on my bookshelf which was excellent, but on first look this is a big step forward. Ludvigsen notes in his foreword that this will be the last update.

UPDATE Jan 2020:
A spectacular book from Porter Press has arrived, a two volume history of the works 956.- every race, every chassis, all of the key people. Posting some pics at the end of this thread.

Thanks for the share.

I thought that was coming out a little later, I was signed up for an alert from the publisher. Assume you got it from Amazon?

Took a look at the TOC - is there much on development of the 981 GT4?

Yes..it seems to cover the development - I am not an expert on that model but it looked fine to me.

. Also he has rewritten some important sections, in particular the development of the 911 and what the various prototype of the period are really for. I got the book direct from the publisher. Its about 2800 pages so of course there are sections of less interest to me, but apart from a type on a name there was nothing I found that was inconsistent. I checked it out against the cars I actually own and it was dead accurate.

Yep, I have a lot of books on the cars I own, (mainly Porsches now, but lots of BMWs before that) and a few I lust for. Lots of stuff on the E Type and the 300SL--.Maybe one day smile

I have an earlier copy of the set too. I asked about the GT4 as it was an interesting development point being the first time that a 911 motor was used and just wondered how that was presented in the context of the rest of the book. The TOC suggests a focus on GTS.

Will pick up a copy, well, Amazon etc...

Nice! Slightly depressing that I guessed where and how much before I googled. I keep telling my wife, if I croak don’t send all these to the charity shop without googling first!

It's as silly problem but a real one. I have a lot pf publisher's editions that apparently have value. I have left appropriate information.

Don't get too excited about the value. I have just bought the 1st edition off flea bay for £20. It was up for £120 or make offer. No offence but it is a small market of people who will pay £450 new but an even smaller market who will pay anything like that 2nd hand!

Wonderful, I was lucky enough to get my original signed by Karl when we were doing some judging at local car show.

A very affable and interesting guy to spend a day with.

He was very interested in the CGT.

Best Porsche book IMO is Gruber & Konradsheim Carrera RS.

Yes, but it’s only one model, not everything Porsche.

Gave it to a fellow enthusiast. No point in keeping it and not into eBay or the like. He is enjoying it I hear.
