I want a GT3... NOW!!!
Discussion
Ahhhh. Me too. Been thinking about a GT3 when i change the Boxster. The standard C2/C4/C4S always left me thinking that they weren't that much better than my 'S', given the price hike. The GT3 I had a go in though, was stupendous.....a completely different beast.
Got some questions for the experts amongst you....
i. What's the difference between the Mk1 and Mk2?
ii. What are they like depreciation wise?? Was considering buying a new 05 plate one that they've got at Reading OPC.....
iii. I would want it to have aircon and leather.....and most of the ones I've seen advertised do. Does it really make that much difference to the performance without these items?
Cheers chaps,
J.

1= MK1 is 360 bhp slightly lighter, 4 pot calipers, that are fine for road, but need upgrading for heavy track work.
MKII 381 bhp slightly heavier awesome 6 pot brakes
2= used prices are very much up in the air at the moment. The MKI is a lot rarer than the MKII, so subsequently is commanding strong money for this reason, MKII prices have taken a hit lately, but should hopefully be bottoming out soon.
3= Leather seats are usually found in comfort model, which also has no cage
Clubsport models have nomex (fire resistant)seats and cage as standard.
Leather seats can be found on some clubsports and vice versa, some comforts have had cage retro fitted.

Just had a good thrash in one - my god that thing is absolutely awesome. I really need to be doing that a lot more often.
Help - someone save me - I shouldn't even contemplate it but I just have to have one!!!!!
I know where there is a very good RS that might be looking for a home which should really put the cat amongst the pidegeons....

You're not wrong there - although they're so damned good you can easily
get a bit carried away and carry too much speed up to the breaking point and no matter how good the car, you can still off it nicely (oops) if you get it just a little wrong. Great fun, though!

Does a GT3 have different body panels (aero-kit aside) than a std 996 - in the same way that for instance a 964 RS had ali bonnet & doors?
cheers
No i don't think so, only the RS has a carbon bonnet.
The shell of the MKII is the same as a Carrera 4, i'm not sure if the MKI.

The Mk1 is also built on the C4 chassis.
The 4-pot brakes on the Mk1 are absolutely fine, will stop you as quick as the Mk2s. Initially people did have problems with brake fade they felt was too early - and a lot upgraded to the Mk2 brakes which have much larger pads, so take longer to heat up and fade. However, a Mk1 with good fluid (SRF) and good pads (Pagid yellow/orange) will be absolutely fine....according to porsche the initial problems were to do with pads/fluid and technique (braking too long instead of late and hard - the long drag generates heat).
The Mk1 is lighter than the Mk2, but has less power (a Mk1 is actually lighter than a RS by a few kilos) - 360bhp vs 381bhp. The Mk1 clubsport also has the lightweight flywheel found in the RS - unfortunately the Mk2 clubsport didn't have this - it makes about 0.3s difference to 60mph.
There were only 28 Mk1 clubsports officially brought into the UK (making it a rarer sight than a RS).

I got a black GT3 Mk1 a few months ago...totally awesome...was considering an M3 CSL but when I drove the GT3 I HAD to have it.
I preferred the Mk1 car, as I felt the turn in was slightly sharper, and the reduced weight made a difference.
I upgraded to the single mass flywheel and cup clutch before taking delivery, car had black leather carbon fibre recaros from new (superb - AVOID the std seats!) they are tight if you're big through the shoulder, but worth it for the excellent support.
Suspension upgrade and more power via. Manthey K400 kit soon
, and brake upgrade on the front too. With the race flywheel, it's noisy and rattles a lot, but who cares...the gains are worth it.
Only 3 problems - 1. ground clearance under the splitter (now removed)...which scraped on most journeys 2. I find the ABS kicks in quite early under hard braking (which is surprising given the quality of the brakes, and a real pain in the butt...thinking of disabling ABS, as the 'feel' under braking is sublime in any case) 3. the inevitability of losing my license sooner rather than later (courtesy of this ludicrous transport regime we suffer)
Best car I've ever owned by a huge margin, and I couldn't imagine changing it for anything short of a GT2. If you care about comfort, then go for a TT, but if you want the racecar experience then only the GT3 will do...if you even POSSIBLY can afford it...then get one!

God I wish I hadn't started this thread - because right now I just can't with too many other things on the go. I just feel very priveledged to have joined the few who've been able to experience this thing in the environment it was made for - on track.
On a different note, the particular environment in question (Ascari) - wow - now there's something else to blow you away if the car isn't enough...
