[I'm not interested in Car Play]

718 Cayman

Is it possible to have an iPhone plugged into the armrest USB socket purely for the purpose of charging, and then using bluetooth for audio streaming?

I'm trying to do this and PCM keep saying iphone cannot be both used for BT audio and iPod.
So I delete the iPhone as an ipod, but then the next time I connect the iphone PCM asks if I want to use the iphone as an iPod or with Car Play???!

All I want PCM to do is charge the bloody iphone (not recognise it as an ipod or for car paly) and allow BT audio.

Anyone know how to get round this?

I'm interested in this too as I have the same problem in my Macan (and same aversion to CarPlay).

On the Macan, I have found that using the second USB point (mounted in the rear compartment) allows the phone to be charged without CarPlay being activated but I don't know if there's a second point available in the 718 cabin. Anyway, a workaround that doesn't entail long charging cables floating around the car would be welcome!

USB cigarette lighter unit plugged into 12v socket with USB/iPhone cable will charge the phone. The centre armrest and nearside passenger footwell have 12v sockets.

Bugger ... I ordered my 718 with smoking package, so have no 12v socket it in the arm rest (which would be nice and discrete what with the cabling etc). Instead I'll need to have USB charger and cable sprouting out from the ash tray.

@gtsralph - just realised you have a 981, where indeed there is a 12v socket in the armrest. However, 718 have a USB port in there instead ... the port that wants to do more than just charge the device.

I don't know the socket arrangement and amount of available space, but I'm guessing one of these would achieve what you wanted:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plugable-Universal-Charge...

Alternative, you could do this:

OK, rather than hack a cable up I just placed a little tape over the two centre pins.

Unfortunately, this did not work and the iPhone did not begin to charge. Clearly a "signal" of some description is required on these pins else the phone won't go into charge mode.

I have now ordered the Plugable USB Universal Fast Charge-Only Adapter from Amazon.

Ah, that's annoying.

If you remember, please come back and let us know if the adapter from Amazon works.

It's a real pain you can't select Aux BT when the phone is connected. Sometimes I want the ipod function (or AHA radio) and other times I want to use Spotify.

But the 718 also has a 12v in the footwell so put phone in glove box.

981 long gone

I can confirm a USB charging adapter does the job i.e. powers the iPhone, yet prevents it connecting to PCM (either as CarPlay or iPod).

This is what I ordered - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FA9GXKM/ref...

Bizarrely the product packaging states "Warning: Cancer and Reproductive Harm" - what do people do with these things?!

That’s good news. At least it was a fairly cheap and easy solution.
