Hi.

I'm looking to swap out my stereo for a Kenwood DMX 7017 DABS I have asked a local stereo fitting place for a price and they have asked if it's optical because if it is the fitting will be a lot more expensive for the new connections.

My question is how do I tell if it is or not?

Also is it hard to swap over, the removal seems straight forward on YouTube or is paying a shop the better option? I've seen a standard double din fascia for around £40 but with optical £240 but again not sure if these are easy to swap over.

Thanks
ACD

Hi!
Yes - All PCM2 systems are optical. It's more problematic if you've also got BOSE as you'll need an adaptor to either replace or retain the BOSE amp, too. It's not terrifying either way.
No offence, though, but a good Car Audio installer would know the answer already.

Thanks for your response.

To be honest, I think he knew I'd need it. I just wanted to check as it's an extra £200. I never took them my car, it was over the phone.

So is my understanding correct;

The PCM2.1 is optical but it's only required if I have Bose speakers? I don't think they are. I'd need to check this.

Are there little Bose badges on the front doors?

Nope, nothing on door say Bose. I guess that settles it. It doesn't have Bose.

I've seen a video on YouTube on how to remove the stereo, looks ok just a few screws.
How easy is it to take out and replace the double din fascia to take the new stereo?

If I was to fit the stereo myself where would the DAB antenna go? I've seen it fitted to the windshield on a few photos. Is this the best place and if so how would I run the cable though the dash to the stereo?

Hi sorry only just saw this
As you say follow youtube videos to remove head unit - there are some clips that need manipulating - do it with a really good work light or torch. There is a secret screw on the right hand side that needs removing.
The PCM has its own whole 'fascia' built in it comes out complete as one unit so there's no additional steps to get it out
Fitting the new one is a simple exercise in trial and error - you use the side guides for the fascia and try them in a couple of positions till it sits perfectly flush
Dab antennae is usually fitted to the windscreen as you say. You remove the A Pillar trim I think it just pulls off but Google it and buy a cheap set of nylon trim removal tools to assist to make sure you don't mark anything. DAB aerial needs chassis grounding so normal practice is to sand a patch of paint off the A pillar inside the trim so it is hidden and then they have an adhesive strip with them. Run the cable down the A Pillar then ideally remove the side dash trim (again it pops off - use the nylon trim tools) or manipulate it into the gap down the dash's side trim and then work it under the dash - I would cable-tie it to a few other things under there so it doesn't rattle.
