Confused - 996tt questions
Discussion
I looked at a couple of 996tt's at the weekend but ended up getting confused about a couple of things. I was told different things by different dealers. Can anyone tell me for sure:
1) When PSM was upgraded to PSM2 and will I really notice the difference?
2) When was the interior upgraded and what changes were made?
3) Can PCM receive traffic information and re-route you if there is a jam ahead?
4) Is there a PCM2? If so whats the difference?
Thanks in advance

Certainly an OPC should be able to answer these questions, the parts people are usually pretty good at PCM questions, knowing when it was upgraded etc & the sales people should know about PSM.
I wasn't aware that the Turbo PSM was upgraded mid-life.
The Turbo has gone through very little in the way of improvements from 2000 when it was introduced. I know that in 2002 they upgraded it by adding a glovebox, rain sensitive wipers & an anti-dazzle rear view mirror but nothing major.

...and also a 3.6 litre engine instead of the 3.4...

I think that was the Carrera rather than the turbo

Sadly not; hence why I'm asking here. Any help in answering my questions (above) would be most appreciated
Here is my take on it:-
1) Don't think there were any major changes. Maybe small changes with each model year, but it's mainly Software so could be updated.
2) There was never a major intior upgrade. I know PCM became standard as did CD palyer at some point.
3) PCM cannot do this as far as I know.
4) PCM2 came out with the cayenne, so I would say MY2003 onwards. It has wide screen, much faster processing, but still CD based.
Cheers Sean

PCM, It mentions TMC in the manual and dynamic routing but I have never got it to work so I am assuming that Porsche hasn't enabled it to work with the UK TMC network or doesn’t have the deals in place for the turbo ;(
I wonder if it works on the 997 ?
I am also wondering what are the latest set of nav cds as mine are from 2003 and dont have the new road layouts where I live ?

Im pretty sure that the early (pre face lift) 996 Turbos had a 3.4L motor and were upgraded to 3.6L in 2002.
There was actually a reasonable change for the 2002 model year.
From the 2002 Press-Release on the 996TT (for America).
"Porsche designed the 911 Turbo not only for high performance, but to provide long-distance comfort, as well. In line with that mission, the car adds several new comfort and convenience features for 2002, including auto-dimming inside and outside mirrors with integrated rain sensor windshield wipers. Other interior changes include redesigned center vents and matte-surface switches, which improve tactile feel. A new lockable glovebox adds to interior storage. The center dash gains an integral cupholder. The car keys now have a color Porsche Crest®."

The turbo wasn't facelifted. It always had the "new" lights etc. and as the others have confirmed always had the 3.6 engine. Anyway, back to my original questions...
My 52 plate tt had pcm1 and my 53 tt had pcm2. No pcm2 doesnt re-route you away from traffic jams.U can program it for different routes, ie avoid motorways, shortest, fastest and dynamic route (dynamic steers you more towards country lanes and faster roads). The pcm2 accepts all 4 main mobile networks wereas the pcm1 only allowed you to use vodafone and o2. To be honest i havent noticed that much improvement in the new pcm over the old one, but then i rarely use it. What i have noticed is the extra grunt the X50 offers so if youvre got the extra cash get the X50.
