Cheap Cayenne....am I mad?
Discussion
My 4.5S is 16 years old this year and has done about 160,000 miles. Not high mileage but she's had a fair try out !
I've had most of the niggly common issues happen such as Carden shaft bearing failure (£400), in tank fuel pump failure (£1000), water pipes in vee of engine, windscreen drains blocking, etc but most of these can be fixed for moderate cost if you have a decent mechanic on hand.
The air suspension has been totally reliable apart from needing the contacts cleaning occasionally . Interiors are incredibly hard wearing and should present almost like new.
Tyres and brakes are an annual event, you can either pay Porsche £1500 an axle for brakes/discs or do both axles for £500 using oem parts and a local garage, your choice. Again with tyres, I ran mine for years on the proper Conti sport contacts 275/45/19 at £750 a set every year but now I use the car as a van and nasty ditchfinders at £65 a corner do for ferrying the dogs around.
The occurance of terminal issues (bore scoring/ chunks ) is a lot lower than the Internet would suggest and any car that has made it to this sort of age has probably been sympathetically maintained and unlikely to give cause for alarm.
The recommended service intervals of every 2 years or 20,000 miles are too long in my opinion, try to find one that has had annual oil/filter changes at least.
Lovely old cars to waft about in and it can pick up it's skirts if need be !
