996 tire choices
Discussion
firstly - sorry if this has been done to death, promise i did search, but only found old threads from donkeys years ago.
So, just picked up my new (to me) 996 C2 Cab, and its lovely, but i have noticed that the tire noise at motorway speeds is damn loud.
It's got Porsche Sport Classic Design 18" wheels with Pirelli P Zero Rosso's on all corners (225/40 ZR18's front 285/30 ZR18's back) and all look to have only a few thousand miles on them if that.
whats the general opinion on that combo? and what pressures do people run them at here?
I have previously run Bridgestone Potenza's on my old aircooled and on my 370Z and found them much quieter (admittedly they also weren't cabs)

When i bought my C4S it was sitting on Pzeros. I found them to be loud and weirdly stiff which also meant that the road-noise was very hard (although 911's always are it seems). I changed to Michelin PS2's and they were night and day different for me - i wouldn't put anything else on now.
I have noticed a lot of love for the PS tires in the Porsche world so looks like that would be the way to go.
I am also wondering if they profiles are a bit wrong for the rears, seems to be a very small side section (285/30)... definitely some space in teh wheel arch for a larger profile.

You will find a list of the Porsche approved tyres here

There are more modern tyres available in the correct size but not Porsche approved if that matters to you.
I found the Michelin PS2 to be very good.

After the holy grail of good and quiet rubber lol.
Car came with an independent warranty, will go through that and check they don't have a loophole with tires, and check with the insurance too just in case.
Just had a look, seems all the obvious ones are in type, and looks like i do have the correct sizes.
An excuse to wear on the pirelli's extra fast

I’ve got PS4’s on mine. Can’t say they are massively better than PS2’s to drive on (had quite a few sets of those), but they wear really well. Had lots of Conti C2’s as well, and they felt OK too, though wore quickly.
Just avoid PZero’s... Had 1 set of rears... felt rubbish and only lasted 3k miles.

Well, just driven in and out of central London and back to North Bucks in conditions a little worse than "mildly moist" and have to say that the wet weather grip in the P Zero's is damn good, but they are also damn loud!!!
Guess will make do with them until they hit the limits, then off they go, and seems that PS2's are the way to go so cheers folks !

Good luck finding a quiet tyre for a 996.
Depending on the surface, the tyre noise goes from merely loud, to deafening. Irrespective of make of tyre.
Aware that it’s never going to be wagyu quiet, I was just surprised when comparing to previous 911’s and other sports cars I have had.Depending on the surface, the tyre noise goes from merely loud, to deafening. Irrespective of make of tyre.
May also have had my senses dulled by too many miles in Range Rovers and X5’s over recent years.
