have many of you boys who track your gt2 /3 /rs's had drive belts break?

was at bedford yesterday and my drive /alternator belt thingy broke. put on a low loader down to opc reading where they fixed it (including a problem with an air lock in the coolant)

i was told that they see a fair few gt3 / rs's with broken belts because when they get tracked quite often debris is thrown up into the engine, gets caught round the belt causing it to break. is this true? have any of you lot had this happen, or have they just inserted a pole in an area of solar inactivity and charged me £200 for the privilege?

The drive belts on the 996 do pick up things really easily - I just had mine done on my 996 TT as it has bits of stones and all sorts in it. I didn't notice it was only when RSR pointed it out and it was changed that I noticed a different sound from it.

I saw your poor car in the pits, I remember the same thing happening to the red GT2 that Tiff Needell tested when it first came out, and it threw the belt as a result of the cornering forces rather than debris.

I haven't seen this happen with GT3/GT3RS at a trackday before...

I copied your little spin past the pits by pirouetting gracefuly off at the first corner, great fun.

Was it an easy fix and can you just carry a spare?

That video I found on emule was the correct top gear review and it did indeed snap in it

You car looked mint with 6600 miles on it

Dan,

Was quite straight forward, although labour got the cost up.£51 for the part, bill ended up being £200 in total.

Be interesting to see if it happens again. I'm going to try and get that video and use it as evidence against the OPC if it indeed does happen....

nope... wear and tear.. although i disputed that a belt should break so easily when the car was only just recently serviced. they said though that any stone / grit etc could be thrown up into the engine bay and cause the belt to shred...

Rob,
hope to go to the next one (1st July, but my third child is due next week onwards so i will have to see how things go!) Do you ever do the Autocar trackdays, ive done a couple of them and they are pretty good fun being able to drive manufacturers cars and seeing how other makes go and handle.
