I think this is an extraordinarily good car(s). Pretty much the only criticism of the last one was the (effective) little turbo engine and they've properly sorted that now with a charismatic and traditional motor. I couldn't believe it when I read they were making this car. It's series production and genuinely good value at £65K. The reviews are right to say it does not really have a rival anywhere near the price point. You have to go to double the money to start to get close. I'd rather drive one of these over to Italy than a regular R8 or even a McLaren. It seems so suited to road driving.
So why all the grumbling on the article forum? Mainly complainants about having to pay for options. Irksome at very worst. This is fabulous car, perhaps the best sensible drivers' car ever. The testers intimate this. It's obviously better than the GT4 on the road; £10K cheaper; and pretty much as fast. It's better than any 911 bar the GT3 (if you can get one). The only reason to have a 911 is if 4 seats is vital. I am a happy 911 owner but this is the crossover point where I'd rather a Cayman.

If you must have a new car - fill your boots.

Personally I'd be looking towards a lightly used GT4 (981) for the same outlay.

It is amazing that a series of factors has resulted in the Cayman being the first to get 4.0 N/A 6 pot outside of any GT car, i.e. a reaction to poor ongoing sales of the 718 4 pot ( I assume).

Interesting you say you'd move from a 911 to one. I think this is Cayman's "Coming of Age" moment as it's getting blanket praise in the media.

Or... to spread the development cost of the 4.0. My OPC said it would be made in very small numbers.

Someone posted Belgian tax rates on another thread and they were eye watering so I don't think that is the target market. These are clearly made for the US.

I'm sure this was already covered in one of the previous threads.

4.0 €10233 tax to get it registered
€2612 anual tax
Thats €12845 before youve driven the car

Cayman S 2.5L €2950 tax to get it registered
€678 anual tax
Thats €3628 which is a lot more bearable

Cayman 2L €2084 tax to get it registered
€447 anual tax
At € 2531 thats one fifth of the tax on the 4.0

Ouch.

My OPC says it’s more about marketing and perception of the 718 in the media many markets need the 4 cylinder cars to make it a viable purchase. He says numbers built will be very low

For me the case for the Boxster GTS4.0 is even more compelling. Fabulous chassis, perfect for road use but still be great fun on track together with a proper electric roof meaning in real world use you can get the top down more often.
There is simply no competitor, new or used, at anything like the price of the new GTS.

I think once optioned up it is not that cheap + the £2k road tax and ongoing £550 it costs you may as well go for the GT4 or 718 SPyder.

the PPF make it sound very quite so you pay for the 6 pot which you cannot hear, and it still does >85mph in 2nd gear which is daft.

For the same money you can buy a Evora GT 410 after their daft discounts, and for the driver the Evora wins hands down imo.

If the GTS was £10k cheaper maybe.

Although I’m not in the market, at the moment, I can see the 718 GTS Boxster or Cayman being a terrific buy for someone looking for a supreme and everyday useable long term sports car purchase.

I’d spec it exactly how I want it , which wouldn’t be cheap - it would be for me not the next owner - and fully accept that the days of owning and enjoying these cars is diminishing.

So, I would make the most of it until the inevitable usage restrictions, taxation, and legislation bite - knowing that, because it’s a Porsche, it will serve its duty until the end.

I agree with this. I have just invested a big wodge in my 996T on turbos, clutch, brake pipes, coolant pipes etc and I'd only see half of that back at best if I were to sell it. I need to drive and blimmin enjoy the thing and I plan to do so! I am more aware than ever that time may be running out.
I love the 718GTS but can't reasonably afford one. My 996T is brilliant and with the 9E Stage 1 shifts staggeringly quickly. Genuinely, I do not want it to go any faster at all. It accelerates too quickly for me to respond.

Interesting point.

I have a 981 GTS, which I think sounds superb (understand the pops and bangs are subjective)

I also recently upgraded the dog mobile from my old n55 m135i to the run out model b58 m140i. And fk me, the PPF has completely destroyed the sound of this car...... it’s massive shame tbh
