Hi all

I am due to buy this Porsche 1968, on the basis of needing some cosmetic updates and some minor work to get the engine running, however on closer inspection the floorpans look only spot welded and like they've been cut and rewarded again. Engine also seems to be missing the floor. Just wondered if anyone else had any thoughts on this?

Looks like an aftermarket replacement floorplan has been (poorly) tacked on.

You do realise its a 912 and not a 911 dont you? Make sure you get it checked out by someone who knows these cars.

Floor welds and missing floor in engine bay look worrying. Anyone have any thoughts on those?

Did you lift the carpet to see if the floorpan had been replaced or just tacked over the top?

Engine bay should look like this:

Haha, yes I know it's a 912, although know many don't realise. I agree, it looks like the floor is badly tacked on. It looks like a 2 piece and the seam hasn't been welded fully, but just tacked. Also that huge dent through the entire middle looks like someones put an electric saw to it and the rewarded it. Just look a mess and worried a.) it might need redoing and b.) if it's a sign of how the rest has been maintained, then it could have lots of other hidden treasures.

That floor looks like a bodge job from the pictures. I would certainly get it inspected before parting with any money. Regarding the engine it looks like one of those spagetti open pipes with center exit rather than a standard back box. All things can be remidied but that is only good if you know what you are in for before you buy.

Get a decent inspection OP. Those wheels are not period, as have them on my 84 Carrera..

I’m guessing, but it looks like the engine tinware is missing ?? Not sure how critical its deletion is to efficient engine cooling. Seek some quality advice.

The floor looks VERY questionable, as others have said, it looks like a half floor repair panel has been welded over the original. The fact the welds have been left unprotected (I presume they’re still in the same state as photographed ?)

Get someone to do a very thorough PPI on the car, it’ll be the best £150-250 you’ve spent. Ever.

THANK YOU everyone

I've decided this isn't right for me. A nice car for someone that might be able to sort the welding themselves, but otherwise too much of an investment to get it right. With the economy being so bad, prices are likely to dip this year as well, so fingers crossed I can get something more sound. Thanks again for the inputs that helped me make a decision I'm feeling is right.
