Hi Porsche people,

I want the roll cage in my track day car (Clio 200 Cup if you were wondering) to be as close as possible to Porsche Viper Green, shown in the pic below:

However, paint codes are no good because the powder coat is done on RAL colours and is not quite as scientific as matching a paint code. Therefore I need to pick the closest RAL colour to Viper Green from the list below.

https://www.e-paint.co.uk/RAL_Classic_Colour_chart...

At first glance, I'm thinking either RAL 6018 (maybe too dull?), RAL 6037 (perhaps too dark?) or RAL 6038 (too luminous?). Does anyone have any real life experience of this colour and the closest RAL match?

Thanks
Iain

I would say that GT2 RS pic isn't an accurate representation of Viper Green, it's darker in real life.

RAL 6037 is probably closest to Viper Green and 6038 closest to Lizard Green.

Judging based on screen is problematic (there is a long technical explanation which I don't think you want to hear) but depending on how much the job is going to cost and how important this is to you, if you can get a colour reader, you can check the nearest match RAL reading off a body panel or swatch. Cheap units can be bought on Amazon - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Datacolor-ColorReader-Col... or if you go to a professional paint supplier with a sample (my OPC has lent me swatches before) and get the paint shop to match off that.

There is a good chance that you won't get an exact match due to the way that RAL colours are formulated but if near enough is good enough and your car isn't Viper Green where you'll see it's not a perfect match, then you'll be fine.

I'd suggest getting some RAL spray cans of your candidate colours and paint a sample section - 6038 which I'd say is a close approximation to Lizard Green (I'm looking at a RAL swatch book) will be duller inside your car and may actually give you the look you want. Colour perception will be impacted by texture as well - assume you're going for a gloss finish? A good powder coat shop will help you get the aesthetic you want if you give them a reference and explain what you want to do. If they can't, I'd go somewhere else.
