Regarding Yokohama AD08 tyres, does anyone know the difference between the R and RS. I ordered 4 tyres and 2 are R and the other 2 are RS. Before you ask, of course I would have gone for Cup 2's but they do not make them in the size I require. In fact, practically nobody does anything decent in a 16" tyre applications.

The original was the AD08. Good road legal track day tyre, well liked in its day. That was then replaced several years ago by the AD08R. Even better, even stickier in the dry - a general improvement along the same lines.

That is unfortunately where they peaked. I think the AD08RS, replacing the R, was brought in to satisfy EU environmental quangos. I think "lower rolling resistance" was the official management speak. Some say that just means less grip, and that certainly is the opinion of some who have used them. I believe this opened up the European market to them, and presumably tooling up the machines to make separate R and RS would be financially inexpedient.

I'm currently running R front and rear. I've got a set of RS to go on the rear when they wear down to 3mm, and I'll find out what they're like then. However, I hear the word on the street is there is a small difference. People who come straight to the RS never having tried the R seem happy. Those who knew and loved the R usually say they can tell a small difference.

I genuinely wouldn't worry about it. I think if you try the R on one end of the car and the RS on the other, you'll be fine. It shouldn't cause a marked imbalance or anything. I would imagine any imbalance that may be there will be little more than negligible and you'll soon get used to it as the normal handling balance of the car.

Many people are lamenting the end of the old R like it was leaps and bounds better, but that's internet hype/overreaction. Put it this way, those who lauded the R also highly rated the original AD08. Well, the AD08RS is likely to be at least as good as the AD08 was, so what are they worrying about?

I'll be perfectly happy to use the RS when my Rs are out. I'm also running 16" rims, and I think they're the best option in that size. The 888R is great in the dry but I think I heard some reports they're not as good in the wet as the Yokos.

The new RS does not offer the ultimate grip or performance of the R and I personally wouldn’t be mixing the set on any of my cars. The RS is slightly compromised as it had to meet new stringent EU regulations so has sadly lost some outright performance. I would want a full set of the the R or a full set of the RS.
