£2000+ For A Service 2009 987.2 2.9l Boxster
Discussion
Hi,
Last summer I bought a 2009 987 gen 2 Boxster with 49K miles on the clock from an OPC. It came with a two-year warranty. It was losing coolant, so I took it to the OPC. The cross-over pipes etc. will have to be changed out. It is being fixed under warranty or would have cost me £1800. I am waiting for a drivers' door-card as the drivers' window would not close fully. They implemented a work-around; this also is being carried out under warranty. Next year I will need a 12-year service. I asked them for the cost, all prices include VAT: -
JOB OPC franchised dealer Hertfordshire
Main Service £816.32
Spark Plugs £408.20
Tyre Sealant £94.64
TPMS Batteries £23.40
Check Airbag etc, etc, etc... £70.20
Drive Belt £200
Brake Fluid £160
PDK Transmission Oil Service (12 Year) £245.82
Total £2018.58
I wanted to keep it in the OPC servicing to be able to buy a 1-year extension to the warranty. It (warranty) is an insurance product underwritten by Allianz. One of their conditions is that if any servicing/maintenance done outside of an OPC is not up to Porsche standards, they can walk away from any claim. Neither are any non-Porsche modifications allowed. I already paid £2100 for a Porsche Sports Exhaust and a Sport/Sport + button The OPC told me to get all service and maintenance work done from an OPC so that they (Allianz) can never walk away. £2018.58 sounds excessive for a base Boxster service. Do you think they are 'taking the mick'? My local mechanic who services my BMW said buy the parts on Eurocarparts and he'll change the oil, oil filter, air filter, drive belt, sparks plugs and brake fluid. He also said get 3.5l of Castrol Syntrax and 2l Fuchs Pentosin power-steer oil and he can change the rear differential and power steering oil too. I already have Carly For Porsche and scan for error codes periodically on all ECUs...He said to me use Porsche independents for when you have problems. He said the reason is that they get Boxsters in and will have seen those problems before and have had prior experience of fixing it. He said any technician should be able to do an oil, air-filter, sparks plugs, brake fluid, drive belt service on any car. He charges £75 an hour all in. I'm also looking at 9 Excellance, JZM and RPM Technik. What do you guys think?
Thanks
H

3.5l of Castrol Syntrax??? Your BMW guy has clearly never seen a PDK gearbox before. They use about 7 litres of a bespoke (and expensive) oil.
Yes, the dealer is expensive - use a specialist. You are allowed to have the car services at a garage outside of the dealer network & still renew the warranty. Any of the specialists you mentioned should be able to advise.

The rear differential is separate to the PDK gear-box. As standard we have an open rear diff though you can buy a Wavetrac torsen diffs for the 987 PDK Boxster S only S though. I don't track enough to warrant it. I'll probably buy some braided lines and racing brake fluid for my CAT driver training...Would have liked to add a Wavetrac but what can you do...Yes, the dealer is expensive - use a specialist. Regrettably you cannot renew a Porsche AU Warranty unless the last service was by an OPC. Unfortunately as it’s an insurance based product they can make up whatever rules they like. The costs quoted by the OP are excessive and it should be possible to make significant savings by canvassing other OPCs. Your negotiating position is strong if you are renewing the warranty at the same time
Porsche used to publish a fixed price service scheme for each model. Only what Porsche called Participating Centres charged those prices, others being free to set their own charges.
The scheme was on the Porsche website until late in 2019 and the prices shown were valid until 31st December 2019.
My own car was serviced in June for the relevant fixed price by PC Chester.
The price includes labour, parts and consumables for the items in the table above the prices.
If a 111 point check was required for a warranty extension there was a reduced price if carried out with the service.
I have a pdf of the information but have to take a screenshot for posting on PH.

The main issue with OPCs is the 'price-per-job' menu they use.
Go to a good indy, tell them what you want, and they'll give a total cost for the work.
Porsche charge for each item, and the service is only ever just that - it doesn't matter that, say the Spark Plugs need changing at the same time, because they consider that a separate job.
I'd try asking them for an overall price for that list, and I'm sure they'll come down to a more reasonable(ish) level.
£400 for Spark Plugs though - Yesus.

But isn't those painful to change? And 6 high end plugs will cost you at least 90-100€ just for parts.Go to a good indy, tell them what you want, and they'll give a total cost for the work.

I think those prices in this thread is quite reasonable. And i don't even own a Porsche.
I may be mistaken, but recall Porsche OPC giving me a handbook once that said cars over (I think) 10yrs are now covered under their reduced servicing prices.
Am sure someone on here can correct me, couldnt see any info on their offical site.
But might be worth checking that, ringing around other OPC's and also Indy's because with the money saved it might be cheaper to bank the difference and 'self insure' against any work that might be covered under a warranty.

OP, make sure you phone around a few different OPCs. I had 8 year service a couple of months ago and spent 30mins or so phoning around 4 different centres. Saved over £500 in doing this, my two local (mid Sussex and Tonbridge) compared to the cheapest, which was South London Centre. Exactly the same service.
