Hello All

Quick question as I couldn’t find anything on the search

As I understand things, In a 911, if scoring from bank 2 (4,5,6) is causing smoke on start up it comes out from the LEFT side exhaust

My question is, is this the same in the Caymans, particularly the 987 ?(With a dual tip exhaust of course?)

So assuming it’s attributed to bore scoring, would smoke on start up as the result of scoring on bank 2 (4,5,6) direct smoke to come out from the same side ie left as well on a 987?

Only reason I’m asking is because someone told me the engine is the other way round on a Cayman, and I’m not exactly a Porsche Master Technician so wouldn’t know

Thank you

Cayman 987 has common pipe at so the dual pipe thing at rear is a red herring.

Ah thanks

The friends cayman I saw had a Remus back box and it had a puff of smoke From only the right side for some reason on start up... only happened a couple of times....

It could be the way the Remus is set up perhaps, failing which, I wonder what else would cause smoke from only one side if it all comes from the same place

Smoke from a flat six on startup is not unusual. A lot of them do it. Started mine for the first time in 3 months yesterday, and it produced a fairly impressive fog bank. Cleared after less than a minute of running though.

Ah right, I think some Remus actually are L/R split.

A little blue puff is pretty normal, so long as it doesn't then plume up for ages afterwards. Also condensation gets trapped in the exhaust - you can see from the photo above the pipes goes up and down, so it can pool in there - so white smoke is not uncommon either if not used for a few days.

Thank you for the replies .

Out of curiosity does anyone know how the Remus is set up, ie would bank 2 be directed towards the right hand side exhaust ?

The engine on 986/987/981/982 (hereafter 98x's ) is oriented differently to 911's (hereafter 99x's ). On 98x's B1 is on the right hand side; bank 2 on the left when viewed from behind the car (on 99x's, B1 is on the left; B2 on the right).
Transmission is at the back on 98x; under the rear seats on 99x.

More info:
On a 98x; the crank pulley is just behind the centre console.

On a 99x; the crank pulley is at the back of the car.

Cayman (S) launched with 3.4 engine and can suffer with bore related issues; usually cylinder 4, 5 and or 6. The exhaust CAN soot up and in bad cases sometimes staining can be seen on the rear bumper. Air/oil separator can also cause smoking - test this by trying to remove the oil filler cap while the engine is running - if the cap is difficult/impossible to remove, the separator has likely failed (a diaphragm within the separator fails which results in full intake vacuum within the crankcase - generally hoovering oil from the engine into the intake; hence the smoke.....)
