I'm looking for first cars to buy and the Porsche 924 would appear to be in my price bracket. Because of their traditional Porsche reliability, daily driving isn't going to be a problem, but...

What's the insurance like for a 21-year-old with no NCB, using it as an only car, probably not garaged either? I'd love one over, say, a 2-litre Capri (another option), but insurance might be prohibitive.

BTW - I am talking about the 2-litre 924, not the 2.4-litre S.

Are there any Porsche Club insurance deals I could use?

I'd logon to the Elephant website (www.elephant.co.uk) and see what sort of quote you get.
I have my 924S insured with them - no NCD, parked on the street in London.
They were over £1500 less than the next closest quote.
I found that the specialist and classic insurers wouldn't touch it as a) its parked on the street and b) its my daily driver.

Good luck!

You are kidding me?

It's just quoted me £7188.39!

I could buy six good 924s for that price

Classic insurance can be a good way of reducing the cost. Most policys need you to have access to another car. None of them stop you from having another classic as "the other car". Hence I've an MGB and an XJS. I even asked one of the underwritters at my insurer to check this for me, and he couldn't find anything to stop it.

So why not buy two 924s?

try Asset Trust - 01285 841 555 - explain your situation and see if they can help. They are the most understanding brokers I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with.

Can i just say, for similar money i'd rather have an early 944 2.5 lux than a 924 non-S...

Also, try privilege - they have been cheapest for me for 9 years running (and i'm 29 now) and i phone around EVERY YEAR.

www.privilege.co.uk i think it is.

Your age will stuff you, as will not having a 2nd car, with a few yrs on ya & with another daily car, on a classic policy £150-200pa would be about right.

I sill remember my £2.5k quotes on a 325i back (*ahem* a few yrs)when I was 21! simply mad!

A 2L 924 is not really very desireable tho as standard, an S or a 944 Lux are waaaay better cars.

2.0l Capri tho? hmmm I'd rather walk!

I know I'm going to let you all down now, but I've decided against the 924. I'm looking now for a Scimitar SS1 1.6. I'm getting favourable quotes from everyone - even mainstream insurers - and it'll let me have some PH fun whilst building up an NCB.

>>Apart from Elephant - their quotes are absolutely mad. £1450 for a £1000 Scimitar, and £7k+ for a £1500 924

I went through the same thing and decided I'd rather have a 944 than a 924, for a variety of reasons. One of which was the better ventalation on the later 944. This is especially important for a daily driver.
Now brought cheapish 944 86 Lux and think its great.
Also funnily enough own Reliant SS1, great to drive, just like baby Lotus and its handling and roadholding are amazing, buying guide in this months Classic & Sports car. Be careful although E plated mine is actually built in 85 and is pre-galvanised chassis. Currently stuck on the drive needing a new sill for MOT. This is a major amount of work as the tub has to come off!

Have you considered buying a small, very cheap car (group 1 insurance) to run as a daily driver, with the 924 as a 2nd car? The 'main' car doesn't even have to be a goer, you just need to have a main car for insurance purposes. Many classic insurers are OK with you not having a garage, so long as it's a second car.
Worth considering - you could get a FIAT 126 for £100, probably insure it for £200, and still have enough for the 924, and you benefit from lower insurance. Plus, FIAT 126's are f%^&ing brilliant cars!!!

Worth ringing them - I should have added I'm 27, you might not be able to get the classic only car policy under 25 - sorry, didn't thijnk of that

I would second the vote for Privilege. Much cheaper for me this year than my previous insurance with Admiral, but I suspect I am a little bit older than you!

Not possible I'm afraid - that's what I'd do if I had my own house, but it's my parents place and they have one car in the garage, another on the drive, there's enough space for mine on the drive as well, but any more would just clutter the place up and make getting out in the morning absolute havoc, especially as there's no way on Earth they'd let me put the Porsche in their garage.

Did you make you mind up TC?

What about the Fiat? I would have a 124 Spider . . . for that money.
