I know this topic has been done to death and i myself posted on the last one to say that my RMS had been replaced and i saw no major issue, that was back in Nov 2004 when the vehicle (2003 996 C2) had covered 11448 miles. I have today been told by my local OPC that the RMS has again failed having only covered a further 6677 miles, not taking into account the time the car has been droping oil i should imagine the seal lasted approx 5500 miles and a total of seven months. The OPC has informed me that under warranty they are happy to replace it once again, i am concerned at the longevity of this part. My warranty expires in Sept and i now feel obliged to replace it just to cover the RMS, a situation i shouldn't find mysef in! Can anyone give me their views or advice on this matter? am i entitled to demand more? of should i accept the offer made by the OPC, is this issue devaluing the potential Resale value of my car given this info can be obtained on resale?

Dunno, but I'd say it was a no brainer getting the extended warranty on a car this expensive. I wouldn't buy it off you second hand without the OPC warranty...

Have you asked them about a replacement engine? I thought they did this under some circumstances, although that may only be when its out of tolerance by more than a certain amount.

If it wewre me I'd ask them why the seal is failing. (Don't expect a detailed answer!) I understand it's a more serious problem causing the seals to fail, mostly it's not a problem actually with the seals. (Crank bearing / floaty crank or soimething like that.) My advice would be to change the car straight after seal replacement unless the fundamental problem can be solved under warranty.

Have spoken to PCGB and they have asked the OPC to carry out an investication as to why the seal has failed but given the fact that i returned the car 3 months ago because i'd noticed oil on the floor and the dealer couldn't diagnose any problem i don't hold out much hope!!

Wot Dan sed.

Buy a warranty. £60 a month is small beer compared to £11k for a busted engine.

Pay the warranty, and then enjoy the car.

If it breaks, they'll fix it.

Another vote for extending the warranty here.

I just had a new turbo and oil lines recently....on a 9 year old car. Bill was way north of £3k, all under OPC warranty.

It is my intention to renew the warranty but this isn't the issue, my rant is at the very fact that this componant hasn't managed to cover 12,000 miles. If it was replaced now and i didn't renew the warranty and it failed again in 6k Porsche want nothing to do with it! Rough justice i say

Ask them to measure it with the proper tool. If the shaft is out of tolerance by a certain amount (which it may be given the fact its failed again), they replace the whole engine as its cheaper and more reliable than trying to take it all apart.

Thanks Dan, That's the info i needed, i know the warranty is invaluable but i don't want the hassle of running the car back every 6k for an RMS. I'm not sure what damage the clutch has .... will suffer? unless the problem is resolved, and as i said earlier the stigma attached to the car will inevitably effect its desirability.

Dunno about the clutch, although I think they can become contaminated if the RMS goes unchecked for too long.

If it really bothers you that it may go again, your only option is to get a GT3/GT2/Turbo as they have a more robust engine.

I seriously thought about that but was shocked at the px the OPC but on the C2, i was also concerned about the stiff ride, i live in the sticks and i'm not sure how the Gt 3 would take to the pot holes!

Nice idea but i'm not to keen on the styling ..... no offence to anyone it's just personal choice!! I'll see what the outcome is on the RMS and may very seriouly consider taking the hit and moving up to the Gt3. Wish i'd have thought more when i purchased the C2!

Fair enough. I didn't think the GT3 was too badly composed when I drove it on Sat - no worse than my Noble and the seats were softer which helps. Not my first choice car for potholes though. Personally I prefer the turbos styling - all part of life's rich tapestry!
