I know this sounds like a stupid question, but would you compare driving experience on 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 with Macan GTS?

I am asking for an opinion since I want to buy one of those, new.

I drive mainly for leisure. Convertible experience makes me happy, while Macan has more seats and is more like an all weather car. I very rarely need more seats, maybe several times a year, but still.

Is Macan pano roof close to convertible experience?
Is Macan GTS driving experience close to 718 GTS? Provided pdk of couse.

I'd go with

No, no and no.

One is a 4wd family bus, a decent family bus, but none the less - the other is a bespoke sports car with a 4l flat 6.

I've got a 718 2.0 Boxster PDK and a Macan GTS so not quite what your asking.

But anyway in an attempt to help, the Macan has extraordinary abilities in terms of handling, comfort/poise and speed, can quite easily be hustled along B roads without too much effort and is actually really good fun to drive. It certainly has the ability to put a smile on your face when required and its pretty versatile as well. If I was only allowed 1 car to do everything it would be at the top of my list.

With the roof and windows open on a hot day it gets close to being an open top but its only really comfortable up to moderate speeds (circa 50-60MPH) after which its too blustery and noisy even with the windows up.

Having said that the 718 is in a different league when it comes to driving pleasure and in my opinion the Macan can't really touch its nimbleness through the twisties. It'll cruise all day on the motorway in comfort, although you do get a bit of tyre roar which can get a bit tedious. Roof down, windows up can be enjoyed at 80MPH in Europe with very little buffeting but it's still quite noisy. You can still get enough luggage in it for 2 weeks away if you pack sensibly so it's not as much of a compromise you might think. Oh, and the engine actually sounds pretty good at full chat but clearly not like the flat 6.

I've got a 4.0 GTS on order but have delayed delivery as I'm not convinced its worth the extra outlay especially as my current 718 is just coming up for a year old and I've really enjoyed it so far. Hopefully I'll get to drive one next year and then make my mind up but either way the Macan is staying.

Drive both and see which one floats your boat.

Good luck

Interesting purchase dilemma.

We've got a Macan Turbo Perf Pack which in the previous gen has the GTS suspension with 80 bhp more than the GTS and my wife has a 718 2.0 Boxster. So our Macan is "sportier" than the GTS and our Boxster is less sporty than the GTS....for a fun drive I would still take the Boxster every time. Don't get me wrong the Macan is so much better than it has any right to be as 2 tonne 4x4 but you can't hide that weight. For me as a daily driver I think our Macan is the best car Porsche make for our use. We need rear seats and boot space and want a car that can handle any weather and be comfortable to do longish trips...and it's still a great car to drive.

I don't think the Macan with the Pano Roof is anywhere near the feeling of driving a Boxster with the roof down. If your lifestyle doesn't need the practicality of the Macan I would buy the Boxster 4.0 GTS without a doubt.

I've done the whole swap a 2 seater convertible sports car for a saloon with a panoramic roof thing (albeit Mercedes-AMG cars), and in no way does a panoramic roof come anywhere close to the open top car. I even found with the panoramic roof open it was more noisy and uncomfortable than the open top and used it very rarely

So much so I was back in a two seater convertible the next summer......and would never spec a panoramic roof again just for "fresh" air.

The driving experience is not comparable. That is the short story and all you need to know.

The Macan drives very well, for an SUV.

The Macan drives exceptional against any car that isn’t a sports car.

The boxter is the ultimate sports car.

Which ever you buy, you will love but for wholly different reasons.
