996.1 C2 gear linkage cables disconnecting repeatedly
Discussion
Hello, my first post on here and not the happy I love my Porsche post I was hoping for. I had an issue with being unable to select reverse, this was diagnosed to a knackered and incorrectly installed gear cable. I got this replaced under warranty for a brand new cable. However this cable has now become disconnected from the transmission 3 times in 3 weeks, twice the blue connector and once the black connector (each time the white plastic cup has come out of the coloured connector and remained on the ball joint). I have since taken it back to have another new cable fitted assuming the first new cable to be faulty. However on inspection there appeared to be no fault with the cable. Now I’m concerned the same will happen with the 2nd new cable as well and the garage are at a loss as to the cause and want to open up the gearbox to investigate, a cost they’re not willing to cover. Thought I’d see if anyone on here has a suggestion before this gets expensive?
I’ve read that the ball on the linkage rod can wear. IIRC the bit has to be ground off, drilled and a bolt in type fitted when done in situ as the linkage cannot be disconnected from the box.
I could be talking complete rubbish but do recall reading something along these lines a while ago!
Also, my car had a few ty-wraps bracing the cables at the gearbox end.
Last thought has cable(s) been adjusted correctly using the Porsche plastic retainer on the gearstick?

Look into these first if its the transmission ends that are slipping off:

Very easy to knock up out of a something like a spare exhaust clamp if you have the time and tools - and don't wish to spend £100.....

Those look like exactly what I need thank you, just checked and they do a 996 version so will order those for peace of mind in the future. https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod133484/Gear-Shi...

I do have a lingering fear about what might be the root cause, or do I just leave that for another day...
The balljoint sections can wear; especially if the previous cables had deteriorated and let in dirt/water.
The retainers work well - annoyingly if you needed them for a Vivaro van they'd be a tenner on ebay......but definitely preferable to a 'box rebuild/selector mechanism part replacement which requires stripping the box.
