Hello all,

My first post since changing over from the Tuscan to the porsche. Haven't even been on the site as I have been too busy wearing out the tyres and pads to have enough time to get on here.
Great car, absolutely love it, best thing I ever did ... and haven't broken down in 6 months !!!! ha ha

I use the car everyday (only car) so have got quite used to it in shorter space of time than may weekend users might so am looking at what are my options when it comes to tweaking around with the car.
Things I have been thinking of that I am looking for some help on from more knowledgeable people than myself:

Engine - Increase Power, reduce Turbo Lag and improve response time

Sound - Having had TVR's, I do miss the sound (the onlyt thing I hasten to add) but have been told that Turbo's don't really benefit from a Tubi/Sports exhaust (is this really the case?!?!)

Bodywork, I absolutely love the shape of the car, but do like the look of the GT2, Techart style front bumpers - Anyone know where and £ ?

Any assistance, suggetsions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

GT2 style front valance:

IMHO a turbocharged car will never have the sound of a tuned NA, but I suspect a well developed sports exhaust sytem will make a world of difference.

As for increased power, word seems to be that DMS do a mighty fine job, if you don't want to start getting into silly money. I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along soon.

A very simple ECU upgrade will take power to around 500bhp, the internals & turbo well able to handle this by all acounts. If you want to go higher then bigger turbo's are usually recommended (from the X50 upgraded cars) These actually increase turbo lag as they are bigger.
Exhausts usually liberate around 15bhp & with sports cats allow turbo's to spool up quicker, reducing lag.
Tubi are down the road from me so tempting, DMS also offer a very good exhaust upgrade (according to a couple of people I have spoken to who are very happy with thiers) which in conjunction with their ECU upgrade gives a standard car around 520bhp.

Re the bumper, I love the look of the GT2 front bumper too, when I looked into costs it was around £5k fitted !!

Sure there are cheaper alternatives.

AmD will tune the 996tt up to 490bhp as an exhaust/cat/remap package deal. Rich 1231 (on this forum) has had this done and seemed to be happy.

Thanks for the info, looks like I will be going down the ECU remap, Exhaust and cat route as it seems to give everything that I am looking for.

£5k seems quite expensive for a bumper. Looked around yesterday and they seem to be around £2.5k prepaint, unfitted !! ... standard one suddenly looks much better than it did yesterday !!!

Any 996TT owners who have actually had a sports exhausts fitted, and which ones would you recommend?!
Any ones to look out for?
(Presuming that each manufacturer's sounds slightly different)

Fitting was the expensive bit when I enquired.
I did ask at an OPC (silly me) sure you can reduce that price by going elsewhere.
I would want a perfect job done, so would be tempted to contact an official Porsche approved repair centre & get a quote for the work. Bodytechnics in Slough is close to me - was happy with a repair to my C2 that they carried out.
Having said that on my old Subaru STi, I bought a new bumper & had it re-sprayed & fitted at a local bodyshop & they did a perfect job.

Interested to hear comments on TT exhausts too - mine needs more sound !!

AMD will alos RR the car tbefore and after to prove the power.. not that driving it doesnt make it absolutely clear :-)

Rich1231, assuming that you have had the work listed above, what are the main differences?!
Throttle response, torque, lag, drivability, sound at idle and at high revs etc.
And how long did it take them ?

As much as I would love to spend 50K and take the horses up to 700, as this is my only car it may be somewhat impractical for everyday use ... along with not having the cash !!

Checkout my profile and threads.
I've gone down this route. DMS map, Fabspeed exhaust & CATs as they give you the most power. @525bhp 1.2bar boost.

1.2 bar boost on standard turbo's ?
Every tuner I speak to says thats too much for longer term reliability.
DMS said that they only take their conversion to 1 bar max, so surprised yours reads 1.2

A GT2 body kit is the way to go for the 996TT.

You get the great looks of the GT2 with benefits of 4WD.

Thankfully mine was done before I bought the car.
I belive the cost was arround £7,500.

Check out my profile for a pic.

Cheers

The standard turbos on the 996TT are rated at 1.6bar constant use by their manufacturer (so DMS tell me).

I see 1.0bar mostly, peaking to 1.1bar frequently and 1.2 occasionally but still often. DMS will say 1.0bar, as that is the common baseline that they warrant as I guess do the other turners.

So as I see 1.0bar as the most common, I’m not worried about long term reliability. If they do fail, I’ll just get some bigger new ones

I just saw Ro's other thread about "IS BOOST LIMITED IN 1ST & SECOND ON A 996 TT ?? "

DMS told me this too. It's to protect the engine I believe, as full boost and power in the lower gears would allow the engine to pickup to quickly and I guess you would loose traction if the PSM is off, or if it’s on, then the PSM would throttle back to retain traction.

cool thanks mate, thought that was the case.
To be honest in 1st & 2nd gears I am too busy hanging on for dear life to notice the boost readout !!

Just to update with some detail.

When I picked my car up October time after AMD had played with it, I drove back from their workshops with the biggest grin.

I havnt noticed any additional lag or lack of responsiveness at all, in fact It feels as if the lag is reduced. Max boost I have seen is 1.1 bar. The car is fine to drive slowly as it always has been, apart from a recurring gear linkage issue which has just been resolved (nothing to do with AMD though). The Miltek exhaust sounds great to me inside the car but you will have to ask others how it sounds outside, on drive pasts.
