965 3.3 turbo vs 996 C2
Discussion
If you had in the region of £30k to spend, would you go for a mint low mileage 965 turbo or a 996 c2? Criteria is fun to drive as a second car (about 6000 miles per year) and just about comfortable enough to take on trips to Europe. I'm used to driving a Caterham, so that's the benchmark for comfort! This would be my first porker by the way, don't know if that makes a difference...Cheers!
If you buy a 965 get the fuelling sorted out or you'll soon learn to dread the on/off nature of the standard set up. Colin (9m) can sort this out for you for £2k i think, thereabouts.
Alternatively, and especially since you are used to a Caterham, get a 964 RS! (Sorry Dom)
Much better resale (may lose less money, but will definitely be easier to sell) and i suspect more reliable also, certainly exciting, and probably less likely to bite than a 965 on boost (unless your name is Dom).
Possibility?

If I were in your shoes I'd go for a 930, and save £5-10K against the price of a 965. Many people feel the 3.3 engine and the 964 body were not a comfortable match, and a lot of the 930's qualities were lost on the 965. Or if you really want to spend all your budget, the Ruf BTR at Eporsch would be hard to beat.

I went from a 965 (3.3) to a C2 a couple of years ago. I loved the look of the 965 since boy so had to try it. It was not for me. Could not get on with the on/off of the turbo nor the general twitchiness of the ride - the steery great though!
I too would consider the RS as an alternative and it can be driven on the road - just not every day.
If you worried about future value both the RS and the 965 will be better than the 996 inmho.
Have you thought about a 993 turbo (LHD for the money that you mention) ?
Look at this :- www.lhdporsche.com/clients/LHDPorsche/DisplayCar.asp?id=405&m=1&t=05072005123322
but i wouldnt look any further on that site or you might expand your budget a bit

965 turbo is not very refined uses very old mechanical fueling & boost control(spring) not good on fuel consumption hot starts or part throttle etc Also if you want to modify for more power later the fuel system will limit you.The old carrera 3.2's have a much more advanced/modern fuel system.993tt is a much more advanced/refined car 964rs is a track car will wear you down on the roads also only 260bhp
RS might not be too bad, the wife's only criteria after three years of the Caterham is that the car should have a roof, and doors! Resale value's pretty important to me. 930 might not be such a bad option I guess. If I've saved some money, I could even afford to fix it! Has anyone here owned a left hand drive car? I could be seriously tempted by a LHD 993 turbo!

I previously owned a LHD 930, and I seriously regret selling it. If you're lucky you may find a late 930 with the factory engine upgrade which became standard in the 3.3 965 (320HP - recognisable by the 4 exhaust outlets). I ran the 930 with a few bolt-on engine upgrades (intercooler, powerflow, 1 bar) which gave it 325HP. So not too difficult/expensive to get a bit more power out of it.
IMO if you get a good 930 and keep it in good shape you will not loose money on it. And it should cost less to run than a 965.
Good luck!

Interesting thread.
I've just been considering upgrading (from a 3.2). I drove a 996 (giant step from 3.2!) and found it too uninvolving.
I love the original 911's and was keen to go for a 930. the reason I didn't was:
1. The aircon is very old, and I was told not very good.
2. The steering, like the 3.2, is not power steering. Normally that's fine but you can't get round mini roundabouts so quickly!
3. As an everyday car I wanted slightly more modern suspension. Apparently the suspension is a big advance on the original.
I've just bought a 965 3.3...we'll see.
