Got a Macan GTS on order for the boss , I’ve been thinking about the tyre and wheel insurance.

Any recommendations or things I should be made aware of ?

Thanks in advance.

Waste of time. Just get a proper refurb when the level of abuse justifies it imo.

I was tempted for the Porsche offering when took delivery of Taycan. However, speaking to my contact at dealership established its ‘man in a van’ rather than proper specialist. Your choice but I’ve decided to take my chances with not hitting the kerbs.

I foolishly took this out.
They were flogging it to me as i picked the car up.

I caught 1 of my alloys on the kerb. 2inc long scuff.
Small small repair.

Man in a van turned up. Couldnt do the repair as he didnt have any black paint. Kid you not.

Promised to returned the next day. No show.
Returned and made a terrible job.
Working on an 80grand car you send your best man ffs.not the oily rag.

Complained.

They returned and made good.

I got 30 quid compo as they were terrified of a complaint back to porsche. but in hindsight i should have pushed for a new rim.

Avoid the alloys ins. The tyre insurance might be worth it though...
Alot of firms out there that can do alloys repairs well.

I got a new end of line Merc once with ridiculously low profile tyres & the dealer threw in the wheel & tyre insurance as a sweetener. Effectively I could have a wheel refurbished every month for 24 months. I actually had two done & one tyre where the sidewall got cut from mounting the kerb to avoid an ambulance. Unless you are particularly careless, don’t bother.
Oh & whilst it was a Mercedes main dealer policy, the work was actually done in the back of a van in my office car park.

I think you’ll find most dealerships use man in a van for all alloy wheel refurbs, irrespective of wheel/tyre insurance or not. My commute to work used to pass the rear of a large MB dealership. Local alloy wheel repair van/man was there regularly.

This info aside, the Porsche wheel cover can be very useful if you have diamond cut alloys. Managed to scuff one on my previous 718. Diamond cut wheels cannot be ‘refurbished’, they have to be ‘repaired’. Man in a van cannot do this. Wheel has to be sent away to a specialist. Porsche provided a courtesy set of wheels for my car while the scuffed wheel was sent away for repair (took a week). I’d have been car-less for a week if it hadn’t been for the Porsche alloy wheel cover.

IMO not really worth it for regular/painted alloys as a decent refurb can be as little as £40, may be worth it if you have diamond cuts.

Yes man in a van and the wheel refurbs are just push back and paint and that includes diamond cut. If they cant repair they they give you up to something like £100 to get repaired elsewhere.
Tyre insurance can work in your favour. Dont let the tread depth to get to below 2.5mm and you pick up a nail within 20mm of the shoulder and brand new tyre supplied.
