I am looking at buying a 930 911, mid to late '80's. Now the thing is i do not like them with the big rear spoiler, i much prefer them with a smooth rear end.

Is it possible, does anyone know, to easily remove the spoiler, as most UK 911's are spoilered. I am guessing they are optional extras from new and must be bolted on. Or would i need to get a new bootlid/bonnet, and if so how much does one of those cost?

Thanks

They're bolted on - removing one will leave 6 (IIRC) big holes to be filled. Better to find a non sport rear cover. Note also that you really ought to remove the front lip too - non sports came without this too.

Caveat here - the Turbo has a larger rear spoiler than the standard 911 for a very good reason....for the same reason it has wider wheels....to cope with the increased power...I've never seen a non-spoilered 930...I wonder how they handle at higher speeds through corners....

The 930 is the turbo and needs the spoiler to house the intercooler.

The 911 Carrera and Supersport Carrera can run without the spoiler.

Colin - the 3.3 was certainly intercooled but was the 3 litre too? I remember the first 930s coming with a more sculptured rear wing with a small extra grille - similar to that on the 2.8 RSR.

Just a matter of semantics - chances are high that this guy is looking at a 3.3 in any case

i thought all the 911's of that shape were 930's, my apologies for the confusion. I don't want a turbo, just an carrera or a targa, nor do i want a wide body one.

Just a standard, narrow body mid '80's 911 without a spoiler.

Where can i get a new engine cover from? Would that have to be porsche so cost a fortune or could i get a replica one or something, as long as it is steel.

Doubtful re replica. You could pick one up thru someone like Discount911 or similar - try ebay as well.

I think you'll find that if you look in the right places then there are enough unspoilered ones around to save having the hassle of changing parts, which, let's face it is never going to be cheap in this market. Also once you start playing around with things like this and they're not original, it may affect it's value, although less so given it's an 80s model we're talking about.

I'm sure I'll now be told that's a load of rubbish, but but just my 2p.

P.S. Don't ask me where the "right" places to look are, but I'm sure someone here will be able to tell you...

I see you are in Spain, and yes you do see a lot on the continent without spoilers, but over here I would say 95% if not more have a spoiler.

I have been looking for a long time now and it is so hard finding a non spoiler one.

But when at Le Mans last month, just about every european plated '80's 911 was spoilerless, and they look so much better IMHO at least.

Yes, I recently sold an lhd 3.2 cab back to Germany - non-sport model - which I wanted...I also believe that non sports are now more sought after...

oh and I believe that non-red Ferraris are more desirable too ;-)

Good point. I didn't actually appreciate there was such a marked difference in 80s consumer demand between Europe and the UK - maybe "yuppie" didn't translate very well...

Would a LHD example be out of the question?
