Hi Guys,

I've got a problem with the (new - fitted with lwt flywheel in May when I picked the car up) clutch on my GT3 Mk1.

Symptoms are that it's sometimes difficult to get the car in 1st gear (though most of the time it's fine), and sometimes (25% of the time maybe) when I dip the clutch pedal it doesn't travel all the way down (though it does disengage the transmission - changing gear is fine). I suspect (not sure as I've never owned a single mass flywheel 911 before) that there's a bit more vibration from the flywheel than would be normal.

Any thoughts as to what might be wrong, and the implications (could the clutch be worn - and as such should I be telling them to replace it again(!) - as a result of the problem - I've done about 20miles through necessity since it happened?

I'm due to take it back to the dealer to get it sorted, but it's a 3.5hr drive so I'm a bit worried about transmission damage...should I get it there on a transporter?

The suffering associated with not being able to drive the thing is driving me schizo :)

hi,

the problem is the center plate springs, i had same problem with my single mass clutch from ruf (sachs) and had to modify with rsr center plate which resolved it beautifully, where did u get the flywheel from?

p.s symptoms are identical so dont worry you will be ok to the dealer, besides you'll find it behaves better at speed. also vibration is normal but will remain

Vibration is normal??? Not in my experience of single mass flywheels.

yes, normal compared to less shuddering on biting point of a dual mass flywheel which he is obviously used to...

lets not forget this is why dual mass flywheels are used on non-track bias porsches in the first place.

Thanks for the comments guys - will feed that back to the dealer.

I'm familiar with single mass flywheel cars (done quite a few track events), but have to say that there's a fair bit more vibration in-gear (not at biting point) than I'd expect in the car at the moment...I'm talking about audible vibration in 3rd/4th gear at 'relatively' high speeds and revs. Doesn't bother me, I just want to be confident that it's normal before I serenade the redline on every journey

There's also a slight 'crunch' occasionally when shifting into 3rd...this happens infrequently though, and I'm guessing it may be unrelated.

just take her back to the dealer bro, she sounds like she needs some more massaging

You do get some noise from the gears as they come up to speed and from the lsd if you have one fitted , but once bove 2000rpm, there shouldn't be any more noticeable vibration....only an improvement in engine flexibility.

The car will shudder/vibrate and be more noisy at idle with the lightweight flywheel, but in-gear shouldn't be noticeable.

As for 3rd gear it sounds like the synchro rings may be getting worn - if you have OPC warranty mention it to them as it should be covered. If not you can ge the rings upgraded to the steel ones from the Mk2, but probably not worth the bother if only occasional problem.

That sounds right, had the same slight crunch into 3rd not long after purchase of a 911T and new synchro rings - and shifting sleeve iirc - for 3rd gear fixed it.
