I've just bought a 996 c4s coupe on an 02 plate and want to install sat-nav (its only got the standard Becker single cd head unit).

I'm looking at the Becker Traffic Pro head units, but need to know if its compatible with the Bose system in the car?

Or, can anyone recommend a good system that would work with the car?

Thanks,
Adrian.

I'd just get a tomtom go 700. I know its not integrated, but its streets ahead of any single din solution unless you are going money no object for a fold out screen etc.

Does your car has the CDR23 in it on that plate? Depending on whether you have the 22 or 23 the car has a different interface.

It's a CDR-22...

Why is the Tom Tom system better than a standard head unit sat-nav? (never had sat-nav before....)

Thanks,
Adrian.

Well that becker unit you are talking about doesn't have a map display, it just gives turn instructions. Tomtom go has a fully 3d map display that updates as you drive which can be mighty handy at a complicated junction. Furthermore you can see a picture of the route it has picked which is handy since satnav almost always picks poor routes in cities! Its also touch screen which can be easier than working some cryptic buttons.

The downside is that it is another box to clip into your car which you can't really live in when you park unless you like inviting thieves.

I've got the tomtomgo 700 and it is pretty stunning. It has the whole of Europe on a 2gig hard disk and can hook up to traffic information too if you pay extra. Its a compromise between clean installation and functionality, as very few car manufacturers have units as good as the tomtomgo.

I replaced the cdr-22 with the Becker Traffic Pro superfast. I went for this one because it's completely stock. It works extremely well and has saved my bacon (no pun intended) many times. However Dan is right, because it doesn't have a map you can't check the route other than by scrolling through the list of roads. For me this downside wasn't enough to justify having an afermarket screen messing up the dash. It will work with your car as long as you get the MOST connector.
