As per previous thread, still looking to buy a cheap Porsche to convert into a racecar:

The 968 I have been looking at will probably not happen (owner wants too much for a shed of a car), and there's not many 944/968s around. The garage who inspected it are strongly urging me to go for a 964 instead, reasoning that similar track prepping, suspension and brake mods will get me a better car, for virtually no more money.

Are they right? I am led to believe by others that a well-prepped 968 could "run rings round" a contemporary 911. How true is this?

What are the essential track mods on a 964? Bear in mind we are not talking RS money, so carbon fibre wing mirrors and mag wheels are not on the list!

We used have a 964.. from what i remember the service costs where higher than other 911's as a lot of work required the engine to be dropped out...

From speaking to people who have both Im told that a well driven 968 will run rings round a 964 in the twisties & even more so in the wet

I considered running a 964 in the porsche club championship next year, and whilst it seems an attractive idea, they are very expensive for parts. Therefore you will be shelling out lots of money. Similaly a 968 is relatively cheap but getting parts is near impossible.
I am told Porsche have no more flywheels available for a 968!!

A well prepped 964 would destroy a 968, partly because of the huge power advantages. You only need to look at the club championship to see old 911's being as quick and quicker than a 968. Therefore a newer 911 well prepared would do a very similar thing.

944 turbo

250 bhp, 5.5sec to 60 and 165 mph out of the box. 300+ bhp upgrade is about £6-700

A 300 bhp silver rose with mo30, big blacks etc etc went for about £4k last week.

Properly set up it should out corner most 911`s.

I know cos I`ve got one

Agree with the 944T bit. Up until about 4 or 5 years ago a bloke called Chris Heeley was kicking arse in a 944t against 964's, 993's, etc. He used to be untouchable at Thruxton, probably the ultimate 'confidence' circuit.

Anyway, I've also got one, and due to a big accident at Brands on Saturday (in an Alfa, not the 944) the car will be going up for sale soon. If you're interested, feel free to PM me.

We have a customer who is looking to sell his black LHD 968CS M030. There is a bit of history with the car as it has had an accident and been repaired which is how the customer bought it. He dropped it off with us to rebuild the front end back to factory standards with new panels. He wants now to buy a 993RS so is willing to look at offers around £11k, which is almost what he spent on it with us doing the bodywork.

By the sound of it this could be what you are looking for?

Chaps - thanks for all the offers, but as I am based in Dubai, it's not economically viable for me to import from the UK. I am looking closer to home but the choice is not great (older cars tend to get shipped out to African and Asian markets, or just die in the heat), therefore I need to keep an open mind on 944T, 968 and 964. Also I need to be mindful of availability of parts (964 more plentiful).

£4k for a 944t with 300bhp. Where from ? thinking of selling my Caterham for something a bit more sensible and useable to and from the track.

Not sure about £4k, the Silver Rose is a limited edition, must have had something wrong with it for that kind of money.

See my post on this, will have a 280bhp (220bhp model with revised DME / KLR chips) up for sale soon, with Mintex pads, aircon deleted & replaced with 'racer' bracket, braided hoses, etc. Not too far off the £4k either. Perfect trackday car, but had at shunt at Brands in my Alfa, so the 944's gotta go. Bugger...

Mine cost me £5000 and its got all the 951 (Silver Rose) bits on it, Mo30 adjustable suspension, rebuildable adjustable Koni`s, 928 brakes, 10 speaker system, sunroof delete option (stiffer shell), wider wheels, LSD, gearbox oil cooler, hardened first and second gears, sports seats etc etc and its now got 968 door mirrors.

Rolling roaded at smack on 250 bhp recently and soon to be 300+ bhp
