I’ve had my cayman a few years now, and I do still really enjoy the car, but I’m getting a little boring with age and probably don’t use it anywhere near its full potential.

More importantly, though, I’ve gone from doing well over average miles to not even doing 2000 a year, and this is not entirely covid related (lifestyle/work/hobbies).

So a lack of use, plus inflated prices, would suggest that selling isn’t an unsensible idea. Has anyone else had similar thoughts?

On the flip side, with ICE cars on borrowed time, I can’t see used prices going down anytime soon. Would it be fair to say I could continue to enjoy the car deprecation free?

A bit like selling your house, moving into rented. The upside is you can pounce on a bargain when it appears. The downside is that you are a bit stuffed if the price is the new reality and keeps climbing. The real difficulty is keeping that cash out of view of people who start seeing it as a new kitchen/extension/pony biggrin

I see it the other way ... with ICE cars on borrowed time, I can't see used prices going anywhere but down in the medium term (say 5 years). I've a lot of wonga tied up in nice metal too and am enjoying every minute I can get in them. Within the next 3 years or so people may not be learning to drive manual cars, owning an ICE could become as anti-social as drink driving in 10 years and in 15 years it could be 'who needs to drive at all, that's the autopilot's job'.

Sold my wife's 718 Boxster a couple of weeks ago which I think we got 20% more than we would have in the autumn...she wasn't using it that much and wants to try something else so sold it and take time replacing it. Thinking of selling my 997 GTS.

2 Stroke Engines were phased out over 25 years ago due to environmental concerns.

RD 400 £5-£10K
H2 750 £10-£20K
RGV 250 £5-£10K
RD 500 £20K +
RGV 500 £25K +

I'm not convinced

I think utility or interaction (actually driving the thing) is not necessarily of great concern to many car enthusiasts...as opposed to driving enthusiasts.

So even if they're legislated off the road, don't see demand for at least interesting or rare or iconic cars suddenly switching off.

2 strokes a different beast altogether, most of the buying are middle/older age with money who want to relive the past when they were 16/17?

Probably similar demographic to first time Porsche buyers - most late 40's/early 50's?

I sold mine last week, Cayman 987.2 gone up from £18k in January to £24k last week, so I cashed in.

I wasn’t using it enough to justify its upkeep, so after three years it’s gone.

The trader has it up for £29k now.

My 987.2 S didn't cost me much more than £25k, and that was back in 2014!

I'm tempted to stick an up on Facebook (its free), but even if I sold it for a great price I'd still miss it on a sunny day.

I sold my extremely low mileage 718 Boxster for 2k more than I paid 18 months, and the price offered had gone up a few k in the past six months.

I’m waiting for a new 911 and happy to go without a car for now.

If you don’t need the car or are going to switch to an new one anyway in the next few months, seems like a good time to sell.

I've done the same, cashed in my 18 month old 718 for a bit less than I paid for it and hoping my new one will be here in the next couple of months. Both our Macan and Cayman have both gone up as well and while it would be tempting to sell them too we've got nothing in the pipeline to replace them with so they're staying put, for now smile

Nice, are you going for another Boxster? I loved the car but new I would end up changing in a few months so didn’t want to lose the opportunity now!

Yep, I was a bit sad to see the old one go as I'd really got used to the flat four performance and noise but I got a slot for a 25 Edition which now has a confirmed build slot so thought I'd let the old one go at a price I thought was more that reasonable.

Certain four stroke bikes of a similar era are just doing as well, for example Kawasaki Z900/Z1000 and various Hondas, so it doesn't necessarily prove the point.

I'd have a mint Kawasaki Z650 or Z900 in my garage if the wife would let me, and yes it's reliving my youth when I was 18......however as I've just taken delivery of a fabulous GR Yaris, so I'm in the midst of re-living the 80/90's rally scene lol.

I've got a feeling prices might have topped out as none of mine have increased any further over the last 2-3 weeks but haven't dropped either. Time will tell I guess.

WBAC prices are at all time highs suggesting they as market experts holding vast stocks are extremely confident prices will continue rising across the board particularly on cars like Porsches due to severe restriction on supply. The over value ££ purchase by Callister group of Rockingham as a prep and storage facility further reinforces this view.

Understandably with the prices WBAC are bidding and Cinch are obtaining BCA auction prices are continuing to be insane as an example we were bidding on a 14 plate RS4 last week which Capped at £32000 and the car sold at £46500. Mainstream £10k 3 year old stuff is getting up to 30% over book price and most experts anticipate prices will continue rising across the board well into 2022 and possibly 2023 with all the issues and headwinds facing manufacturers and used supplies this could be the end of cheap used cars in the UK.

Anyone cashing out snd selling early should really think twice. Wait for July Cap prices they are widely anticipated to be around 10 percent higher than Junes....
