Hi all

Myself and two friends are heading out from Northamptonshire and Notts in 2 x 991's and a 992 with an afternoon destination of Harlech in North Wales.

We are then staying in Caernarfon and attending a track day at Anglesey the next day .... driving home in the afternoon.

I know the driving roads are good and I've done the EVO triangle once but I don't know all of the decent road routes in this area.

Would anyone be able to recommend a route or roads to use from the Shrewsbury area where we will meet up together to then arrive in Harlech ?

Either a full route to use or just some road recommends that would be interesting and fun to drive in the 991's would be much appreciated smile

Or detour via Ffestiniog. All good roads, just keep the noise down when you drive past smile

Harlech to caernarfon - definately go via beddgelert, up nant gwynant (there is a small car park on the left hand side near the top for some photos with Snowdon in the background)turn left at the Pen-y-gwryd pub then over and down Llanberis pass, then onto caernarfon - they are building a new roundabout just outside Llanberis so its a bit slow there,
its not much slower than the portmadog - penygroes bypass - maybe 15mins more

Definitely divert onto the B4391 via Ffestiniog.

Agree with the recommendations but also take the coast road on Anglesey from Llanfair PG through Brynsiencyn and Newborough 1.e. A4080 on way to Anglesey Circuit rather than 1/2 way across Anglesey on A55 boring duel carriageway. I learnt to drive in 1971 on A4080 between Llanfair PG and Rhosneigr

All due to people treating it like a race track, what do you expect is going to happen when the roads are taken over by people driving like idiots.

I live on one of the roads mentioned earlier and I know the local councils are always pushing to calm the idiots down. The number of unmarked police cars has increased a lot this year, and the police have promised unmarked bikes as they are less likely to be noticed.

Bala to Trawsfynydd (B4212) can be a peach.

Had to do it last spring in full lockdown to attend a family issue (my mothers partner passed away suddenly) which was a bizarre experience as there was not another car on it. Kind of lifted the mood very slightly on an otherwise melancholy day.

If your feeling brave, the 'shortcut' from Knockin on the A5 north of Shrewsbury through to Bala is wonderful, but there are knackered potholed sections and some tight sections. Lotus Elise maybe, my 992 felt a bit fat.

Edited to add: https://www.total911.com/great-roads-a4212-mid-wal...

Take it steady, last thing we need is this stretch being heavily censored wink

I am in no way a supporter of ASC's (and rest assured, having lived 30 minutes from the ET for 6 years, I've driven it more than the vast majority) but when two innocent people lose their lives due to the idiotic actions of another individual who was clearly driving recklessly on the ET, ASC's were the only option.

15 + years ago, I made a point of responding to threads such as this, along the lines of "If you want advice on driving roads/routes, I'll happily send you my recommendations via email, but please do NOT publish your favourite routes on here, primarily because all and sundry will see them, and think they'll "give them a go".

I also said at the time, if individuals continue to champion the same roads (the ET and the roads around it) there'll only be one outcome : Hordes of boy-racers driving like idiots every weekend, who ultimately will either have an accident or will irritate the locals to such a degree, the police will have no option but to clamp down on speeding on the roads and or put up speed cameras. Well guess what ...

So whilst the idiots who treat the roads like their local racetrack are a problem, threads such as this one are the real issue.

I'd politely suggest that if the routes listed above aren't to suffer the same consequences as the ET, those who've contributed to this thread, delete their posts and send the OP their recommendations via email...

Time is already running out for those of us who enjoy driving for the sake of it, and the motorist is rapidly becoming the next social pariah, so do yourselves a massive favour, and stop publicising routes in this manner.

Talking of boy racers i was subjected to one of the worst ones last night. Took my daughter for a spin in the RS and driving through a coastal town bang on the 30mph limit when this complete moron came up behind me in a stty Black Clio about 6 inches from my RS's bumper revving the the nuts off his stebox. I slowed and waved him past to which he duly obliged at about 50mph.
This is the problem these days if you have a very expensive Sports/Supercar which attracts too much unwanted attention from boy racer idiots. I would expect the same up in the Evo triangle and why i try and do as many track days as possible these days ideally expensive ones which are too rich for similar idiots.

To be fair Taff, that's how some of these plums drive all the time, irrespective of what they're following. There's a white BMW 1 series I've seen a few times on my commute. He stuck out originally for overtaking a car - they were about 200 yards in front of me at the time, so I got a good view - on the wrong side of a traffic bollard in a 30 limit. I was driving the works van today and noticed a car arrive right up my arse and knew immediately it was him. He continued to drive about 3 feet from my bumper and wheels on the media of the road - even through there's no gap to overtake and I was doing 50-60 in an NSL anyway. You did the right thing. Just let the tts get on with it and don't rise to it.

FWiW, the cameras have been on the ET for at least 2 years now, though I'd suggest you read the contents of this thread, specifically the post that states the roads are now more heavily policed with undercover cars and motorcycles than previously.

seen 2 undercover cars go past this week. I know they are undercover as the lights flashing and sirens give it away. Not sure how often they are patrolling, or even if they are, as I don't spend all day watching.

Yes, I think they'd come out of the woodwork if there were any incident too. Plus, you have to factor in that many cars have dashcams and that groups/convys of cars moving at pace are potentially tricky, legally.

Often, it's as much about the time of day and day of week as anything. I rented a cottage on Anglesey for a long weekend over PCGB track day. Mrs Digga followed me in her I-pace with the dog and all the luggage needed. On the way home on Tuesday morning, we went the scenic route through Llanberis, up the A4086. There was a bit of traffic to Pen-Y_pas, but then we literally saw two cars - both oncoming - until Capel Curig. Best run I have ever had through there. Amazing how well an I-Pace shifts. biggrin

Back in the good old days, when I lived up there between 2002-2009, I'd head out to the ET and surrounding roads mid week, in the evening.
"Off season" weekends were fine (shame the same couldn't be said for the weather) and in summer you could get a clear run on empty roads after 7.00pm on a Saturday or Sunday. In those 7 years I think I saw one 5 series traffic car.
I'm guessing that's no longer the case ...

Rarely see marked cars, see more unmarked ones. Speed camera vans are far more common these days as well, especially around Bala. Winter is the best time for these roads as they are deserted.
