I was on the A38 between Wellington and J27 M5 yesterday (that's somerset for all you city dwellers) when I came over the crest of a hill and the road narrowed suddenly. something flashed out of the corner of my eye - looked red, not white - but I was concentrating on my driving. Bugger, I thought, there goes the clean license. Mais c'est la vie.
On the way back, had a better look. definitely a camera, of the sort you might see on a cctv system i.e very small, behind which was a large flat panel about 2ft square that seemed reflective in nature.
Now, we baint got many of them there things down ere in cider land so oi is a bit puzzled. was it a scamera or some sort of speed control thingie? and should I be expecting a letter in the post?

Was it a 'reduce your speed' sign? Its red and white and could be a flash if you were travelling fast enough.

that's sort of what I was hoping!! but Ive not seen one in these parts before so didnt recognise it. as for speed, I was driving in a manner appropriate to the road conditions and the capabilities of my fine car, but I was looking at the road, not the speedo, so whether I was over an arbitary limit thought up in an age before modern brakes and ABS Ive no idea!

Don't know if this link may help.

www.safecam.org.uk/CameraSites/CameraList.aspx?d=1

I normally associate the red flash forward facing cameras with the "Truvelo" scamera, but I don't think Avon and Somerset scameraship are using this type.

Hope you get nothing in the post.

I wonder if you've seen a ANPR camera of some sort where the A38 crosses into Devon. The police have ANPR cameras on the M5 westbound between J26 and J27 on AFAIK the first road bridge in Devon.

That's right. There's one over each lane on the first bridge after the "dip" (you'll know where I mean)with a plod transit parked just off the bridge.

this one was on the A road about a mile from Jn 27. the other thing is there are no speed camera signs in the area at all - arent they obliged to put them up around fixed sites? I'm going to decide/hope it was a speed warning camera rather than a penalty camera, and just avoid the letterbox for a while

We have loads of them up here in Yorkshire, but no real speed cameras. They just flash a message at you if you are above the limit. Purely a warning and money grabbing or license loosing involved.
