993 Spark Plug Change

If anybody is interested.
have changed plugs on all manner of cars from Impreza to V12's this was the most fiddly and certainly the most parts i had to remove.
Jack the car up and put it on stands, remove the wheels.
There is no need to remove the wheel arch liners to do the plugs.
Remove exhaust tips, and back box and then the rubber air pipe that is attached to the manifold as it is in the way of one of the plugs.
I always use the "cheapest bolts" i can on the exhaust as they are much easier to cut off, they all rust eventually.
You can then see and replace the 3 lower plugs on each side - easy part.
While you are in there, remove the backbox bracket on the right hand side. A 6mm allen head bolt, and then a 13mm spanner, you don't need to remove the 13mm bolt all the way.
You also need to remove the engine shroud (piece of thin metal that the spark plus wires come through. There are three 6mm allen head bolts (1 also holds the exhaust hanger in place) and 1 10mm bolt at each end, this then just pulls down and away from the car. The bolts will be rusty, so hammer in the hex before you try to undue them. The middle hex bolt is behind the spark plug wires, the rubber grommet can be pushed upwards to give a little more room.
Go into the engine bay.
Remove the air box - a 10mm bolt, this give you better visibility for the RHS upper plugs but i am not so sure you need. It is then a mix of working above and underneath to get at them.
To do the LHS upper plugs, you don't need to remove the blower motor, although it may give you more space, removing the large plastic tube that runs upto it is sufficient. Space is tight, you could remove the shroud on this side but it isn't necessary. It is a case of using the right length extensions.
Tools.
6mm hex
13mm spanner
10mm spanner
Spark plug socket
1/4 inch universale joint
1/4 extensions 15cm, and 6cm.
magnet on a stick
I taped the spark plug socket to the, UJ, and then taped that to the 6cm extension, just in case. That proved the right length for the Upper LHS, all the rest were easier.
it is not particularly hard, just takes longer than you expect and these are 25 years old now so expect rusty bolts !!
