New Porsche service intervals

My partner purchased a new Macan S 11 months ago, we were advised at the time of purchase that the service interval was ~2 years / ~20,000 miles. This is also confirmed in the service book. We were somewhat surprised to see a service indicator message appear last week indicating an oil service is due in 30 days' time or 9,000 miles ! The car has covered some 3,000 miles.
Our OPC (the suppling dealer) said, "yeah, this happens sometimes"

Whilst an oil change is no big deal, and will probably do more good than bad - I can't help feeling in this instance Porsche have over sold the service interval.


Anyone else had a similar experience?

Same thing happened with my boxster - purchased it in 2019 as a pre-reg used car. It was registered by the OPC in august 19 and I purchased it in sept assuming it was ‘new’. Roll on a year, the car requested its first service. Like you, I was confused by this as was expecting 2 year intervals. I spoke to the selling dealer who gave me the line that ‘this happens’ but when I spoke to the service department, they confirmed that the car was manufactured in 2018 and the service interval clock was started during pdi when the car arrived in the uk. After much wrangling, the selling OPC gave me a free service, for not declaring that the car was a year older than I thought.

I would suggest you check your VIN to ascertain when it was manufactured.

I could understand that something more 'run of the mill' could be sat on a field/runway for some time before being sold but it seems a bit odd with something like a Porche

I took delivery of a Macan last week and asked the salesman about the first service and he confirmed it's every 2 yrs or 20k miles. I asked the Service desk to reset the car's service due date, it was checked and advised it will need an oil change after 1 yr and the cost is over £400+ VAT. They say its due to the high price of oil.
I have complained that this was not made clear during the sales process and it adds considerably to the running cost. The salesperson claims they have not been informed of this during training.

£400 + VAT for an oil change, are they going out and drilling/refining it themselves.

They really do take the piss.

Agreed, apparently oil is £24 / litre and labour rate £180 + VAT, so I can't see how they get to £400 + VAT.
I doubt sump takes more than 6 litres is £144 and half an hour's labour £90 gives £234 +VAT.

I shudder to think how much Macan first service is, anyone care to advise current cost?

I had the same with my Macan. It indicated an oil change was required at 9000 miles some 5 months before 2 year service period was up. I spoke to the OPC and chose to ignore it leaving it until the two year service.

phone around OPCs, they have different prices, I paid £309 for a 19S

My Cayenne S took about 8 litres of oil when I changed it last year myself. I'd Mobil oil sitting from a previous Porsche which never got used.
I thought I'd change the oil after a year rather than leave it till the 2 year mark as the service indicator says. It's booked in for it's first service in Nov, apparently it costs >£1000!

My 2019 Macan S had its first scheduled service incl oil change at 18000 miles at 16 months old, costing £545.00 at Colchester OPC
According to dash read out it will need next one at 35,000 miles when it will be about 30 months old
So where does 20,000 miles / 2 years fit into that?
All that was done at 2 years old was brake fluid change, that cost £119.84 at Colchester OPC

You can use a decent independent for servicing whilst its under the original warranty period - on condition that they use OE products, and complete to same standard as the OPC would.

I have a 2019 Macan S and had my first service at 14000 miiles and 2years. the oil change mileage was still showing 5 k to go but due on time. However, there are several owners on the Macan forum who have had oil change due indications after very short mileages some as low as 4000 well within the two year period.

the Gen 2 V6's look at the condition of the oil, i.e amount of contaminants and if this gets high calls for an oil service. What causes the level of contaminants to rise is the vehicle not completing a full warm cycle plus a few miles so the contaminants created by a cold start get burnt off or evaporated at high temperatures.

I avoided this by ensuring after every cold start at least about 25 miles was done even throughout lockdown. Fortunately, I live in a country area so this was possible to maintain the necessities of life. Over owners who did journeys of typically less than 7 miles with the car never getting fully warm seem to be those with the extra oil changes. Look at the temperatures for both oil and water on the MFD screen and you will see how long it takes the 3 litres to get fully warm

Basically if only regularly doing short journeys do not run an ICE Porsche, run an EV and charge at home

I have a 2018 2.0 Macan and despite trying to get it hot on most journeys it has asked for an Oil service on 12 months old (7k miles), Intermediate at 24months (12k miles) and just a few weeks back another Oil service on 36months (15k miles). Combined with various other Macan ‘foibles’ - ie blocked drain channels etc, I have been drinking quite a lot of Porsche coffee…. Still love the car though.

I also agree with pmg and now have a ‘19 e-golf for local / short journeys which works well.

It'll be VW's 20K miles, which is actually 30,000kms so calculates to 18,750 miles.

As another poster said, they're absolute max figures - the interval is variable depending on use - no one seems really sure how variable / longlife servicing works - as well as the oil quantity sensor, it apparently also looks at cold starts, hard accelleration, MPG and other other factors.


I wonder if people being asked to take the car after a year have had their vehicles switched to fixed interval servicing? Although I've heard of people with Audi's variable servicing having it pop up at a few K miles and well within a year.

Clearly we are not the only ones. I guess our mileage pattern over the past year has been skewed towards shorter journeys due to lockdown. And whilst our car was manufactured in 2020, I can't find the specific build month. I recall the Porsche factory was shut for a couple of months in 2020 so it is possible that the oil is actually nearer 18 months old.

£400 - £500 for an oil change will make for an expensive day out

One of the many reasons I sold my 981 Boxster and doubt whether I'd ever have another Porsche, when my car was coming up too 4 years old the total cost of service, 111 point check, and two year warranty was about £3k....I always supply my own oil for my cars, but no, not Porsche they have to use their sh*t out of 40 gallon drums and charge you £24 a litre for the pleasure (the Boxster takes circa 9 litres) while Opie oil will charge you around £10 a litre in a five litre pack. I refuse to suffer a mark up of 140% on something that costs them less than I can buy it for elsewhere, it's pure profiteering.

Porsche are the worst, but Mercedes and others are catching up, for the first time I'm using an independent to service my SLK55 and I'm saving around £350 or 50% of the bill for a 6 year service, oh and I'm letting the independent supply the oil because his price is reasonable!!!

Six year service on 981 Spyder (minor service plus brake and clutch fluid and alternator belt change). OPC quote: £1119 incl vat. Independent £785 incl vat.

Spoke to the OPC and sent them a copy of the independent quote and they dropped their price to £830 inc vat.

They have plenty of room to discount if you push back.
