Hi all. Have a spanking 4.2 XK jaguar but having had a few 944’s over the years ago including a 944 turbo a 911 itch is still there. I’m thinking 997. Preferably a manual. Or shouldn’t I stretch for a 991? But……I really like the 997.
I had a 944T for a decade and i found the Cayman R to be closest to the driving feel and pep of a 944T. Throw that into the mix......but back to the 911 - a manual 997 GTS would be my recommendation for you - but if you are after what is essentially, by comparison, a Playstation controller on four wheels, then the 991. 997 is much more analogue and raw (think classic car) than 991. Coming from a XK, I suggest go for a 991, unless you specifically want a sports car or a modern classic.
While I love my 997, it is incredible how much more dated it feels now compared to 4 years ago. Certainly this has to do with the more modern stuff one drives also. I got rid of my classic car (from the 60's) and treat the 997 the same way now, with the benefit that the 997 is far more usable of course.

Go for the 991 OP, miles better than a dated 997 IMV (sorry to 997 owners)
Yeah I know what you mean, horrible dated steering in the 997, full of all sorts of awful sensations. You need that clinical 991 system to sort it out.Being 'dated' is what makes the 997 great compared to newer stuff. I really like the 991 and would definitely have one but 20" wheels, electric steering and a reduced sense of any rear engined bias, you can understand why it's not the 911 for everyone.
There's a lot of truth in the sanitisation of the 911 over the years, fortunately they built tonnes of the things at every generation so there's something for everyone.
If you want a manual, analogue weekend sports car, get the 997.
3.6 or 3.8, both are great cars, if you for for a 3.6 I’d recommend finding one with PASM with lowered suspension (option on the 3.6). PSE or aftermarket exhaust also recommend for added drama.
Other options…well, the more the better I’d say.
If you’re after a more modern interior, more refinement, extremely capable sports car, but with some of the 911 DNA diluted, go for the 991. Against all the competition, they are still head and shoulders above most modern sports cars.
Definitely drive both and decide what’s important for you.
