Hi Guys,

I'm looking to take the plunge into 911 ownership, I've seen a couple of 991.2 GTS's i like the look of but the 992 Carrera S seems to be heading down to similar price points, I want something that would be a Sunday and sunny day car, with a very rare track day thrown in, rear seats are also an attraction as my 2 lads can squish in if we wanted to go for a day out.
Whats the better car?

If it’s your first 911 then I’d probably say go with the 991.2 GTS as they are fantastic cars and will do everything you want without issue and feel more special than a 992 ‘S’ IMO.

If you’d had a 991 previously I’d have probably said a 992 as I’m they are quite a step up interior wise, etc, but as you haven’t then would wouldn’t notice. By this I mean I love my 991.2 GTS and there really was no though if changing aside from wanting a targa. I however borrowed the 992 targa 4S for a day a few weeks back and noticed it was quite a step up.

In summary but the 991.2 GTS and don’t test drive the 992.

I had that exact same choice and bought the then more expensive 991.2 GTS and its not my first 911 either. Still reckon GTS is the way to go. Personally elements of the 992 modernisation arent to my taste but Im a slow burn.

We tried a 992 S Coupe then a 991.2 GTS Targa 4 pretty much back to back coming out of a flat six Boxster 981.

We found the 992 too quiet, too refined - could have been in my Audi RS4.

GTS louder, felt a bit more sporty (and it was cheaper :-) ) - we chose that one.

HTH!

991.2 if you ask me. The GTS has that bit extra than a C anyway, plus IMO the engine in the 991.2 has a bit more character than the 992.

However without being “that guy”, if you aren’t interested in out and out speed or having the latest and greatest infotainment etc I’d seriously consider a 991.1 GTS or GT3.

A friend of mine has a 992 Carrera S and me a 991.1 Carrera S and everytime we are in my car he can’t believe how much better it sounds and how the sounds alone make it more exciting as a sports car. I.e it makes you always grab that lower gear and rev it out.

Want crazy performance (used to turbo power!) and using a lot = I’d go 991.2 GTS with OPC warranty.

Only going to use in the summer and early mornings = best 991.1 GTS you can get.

I've owned both and the best sports car by a huge margin is the 991.2GTS Coupe. Make sure its got RWS as its a real game changer on that car in particular. Build quality is also a lot better than the 992.

As above the 991 is far sportier ,the 992 I felt really stepping into gt territory ,very comfortable but not as engaging .

I had a 991.2 GTS, ordered brand new, I didn’t set out to order one it was brief creep as my enquiry started with excitement over the 991.2 Carrera T.

I went as basic as you could, 2wd, manual, parking bleepers and Carmine paint.

I had every intention it would be my forever car for weekends and touring holidays but I was a bit underwhelmed to be honest, maybe it was my spec but I swapped it after just 12 months for a 997.2 GT3 which I adore.

Good luck in your search but don’t rule out something from the back catalogue, I think trying a 991.1 GTS is a good call.

Maybe you like the 992 haunches that look as though they have been grafted on as an afterthought. But the 992 in my (limited) experience is a bit bland as a drive compared with the 991.2, which has more character - and just looks many times better than its bloated successor.
