Hi all,
Just had my 997.1 (2007) to an Indie, for age related work, corrosion of coolant pipes etc. Also some top quality aftermarket (Topgear) back boxes fitting, along with new steering rack, front shockers (Bilstiens), rear coffin arms, rear main seal & LTT.

Problem is, since the work ‘Temp Gauge Failure’ warning light has appeared on the dash

The Indie seemed to not know the cause ffs!
I decided to book the car into OPC thinking they would pinpoint it immediately with their techno gadgets etc.
Nope! Not a chance. Initial inspection a video of which was emailed to me. Pointing out
Aftermarket battery
Aftermarket wheel nuts
Aftermarket thermostat
Aftermarket coffin arms
6 year old tyres with 5mm of tread needed changing
I am told that before the technician can proceed any further with the investigation he will need to remove the LTT (5weeks old) & install an OEM thermostat (£350)…. Yes £350 !
If that solved the problem I would be fine with it, however after delving on the internet, it is looking like the problem could be one of a number of Solenoids around the engine.
Obviously, I’m no mechanic rolleyes

Are Porsche ‘Having my pants down’ here, and do I really have no other option to let them crack on with it and maybe keep putting new parts on until they cure the problem! nuts

Merry Christmas PHers xmas

I think I would try calling a few another Indies and have decent chat with them about what their experience of tracking these down and chose one you have some confidence in.

Then get it picked up and taken there.

It’s a bit of a faff but will probably be a better result in the end.

Good luck.

Sounds like OPC, my car went in for a recall and initially told me they couldn't so it because I had a vinyl sunstrip fitted and vinyl number plate. Recall was nothing to do with either of them.

It got done eventually after a few calls.

Get a decent indie on the case, where are you based?

I think you may be delusional about the quality and ability of the indy you are using and also the quality of some of the parts that are going on to your car. What did you expect OPC to say? Any decent indy can fix in 5 secs and very average service from your own indy IMO throwing towel in like that. Pathetic actually.

I think if you went to most garages with a car problem, they would address the problem… no?
Not go all over the car like a rash trying to find none OEM parts that are nothing to do with the issue. To be fair the aftermarket exhausts are far better quality than the OEM that split & failed.
The OEM wheel nuts had rusted badly & started to crumble around the radius seats.. the aftermarket nuts are fine, the OEM battery failed, the aftermarket battery has been on 7 years now ( on a charger/conditioner ) when not in use, & never faltered.
I am overjoyed with Porsche ownership. I just think OPC could be a bit more friendly & helpful with customers who maybe don’t have tens of thousands of pounds to chuck at their cars.
I’m not exactly brassic but I’m not Rockafella either whistle

To be fair, I did not know that the indie had used aftermarket parts.

Does anyone think that £350 is a fair price for a thermostat? …. Unless it’s for an F1 car maybe.
There’s nothing to them really! nuts

Not sure which indie you are using, but if your based in the northwest then try Jasmine Porschalink or Unique. Both have good reputation in the NW

Notwithstanding what the indie has done, I think the OPC are having your pants down. Your car and its problems are not their market. I'd expect a good indie to be able to sort the problem.

No.

Take it somewhere else.... but I don't understand some of the 'aftermarket' comments above.

Some aftermarket parts are of significantly higher quality than Porsche - almost anything from Rennlist land for instance.

And as detailed by the OP, the exhaust boxes.

And can you get an OEM LTT? Are they not, by definition, not OEM?

....actually, unless I'm going mad, which I probably am, I'm sure I read a recent post where someone had had the same work done as you on the cooling, and the new LTT was faulty.

Take it back to the original Indie, get him to hoik out the LTT and test it in a jam-jar - give him one attempt?

Or just buy the LTT of your choice and get him to put it in - if no joy, go to an Indie that can test all of the engine sensors.

Another possibility is an air lock or low coolant level following the thermostat change.

I didn’t want to name anyone but Jasmine did all the work leading up to the problem. I will soon know if a faulty thermostat is to blame.

It’s a fairly common problem for the sensor to fail on 996/997. Ask your Indy to change that.

There's a sensor on the tip' gearbox that can give coolant temp gauge problems. Worth changing that if nothing else works. Darren King and Co. at Unique Porsche know these cars inside out.

As I posted in your other thread, go back to Jasmine - on the phone, not an email or text, book the car in and ask them to sort it out. They will want to do this as they have a reputation to uphold. If you go to another garage, it will be the fourth one you’ve tried.
