X51 Power pack for 997 S

Probably not worth the cash. Its bound to be around £6k fitted mark for 30bhp (less than 10%) increase which you will hardly notice or be able to exploit.
I would tick the sports suspension box, or use the money to upgrade to a 997 Turbo when its out, now that will be the 997 to have (or the 997 GT3 !)

hmmmm.....just over double that price gets a 993 turbo into Turbo R spec. Extra 80 bhp(conservative) and a bag load more torque.
This includes new turbos, reworked heads, new valves & guides, bottom end rebuilt if necessary, new ECU, extra oil cooler, new exhauts system....and all by Mr RUF
Considering that RUF have to remove alot of parts and dismantle the complete engine whereas Porsche install the few extra pieces "during the build", seems like a not much value for money.

Simon, I think DMS would be hard pressed to prove a 20 BHP increase on a NA car. What is claimed and what is delivered is very different.
The X51 pack also seems to give a useful increase in torque. I'm not saying I would pay 1000s for it but given the fact that it will have a warranty and add something to resale value(unlike the potential negative impact of DMS to some) it may not be such a bad deal

I agree on resale comment after market mods are a resale killer, never mind warranty killers. Loved the 993 turbo but interior dated even if all 'ruffed' out a power wise. If you look at the torque comparison graphs, it comes in a lot sooner even though the peak is later in the rev range.

3.8ltr factory power pack 993s are very rare and fetch pretty good money. Doubt the 997S will be as collectable though.
No GT3 is a 3.6 l engine derived from the old GT1 block. Its a beautiful piece of engineering loaded with titanium and other exotic technologies normally reserved for big budget race cars including a dry sump. A replacement is in the order of 30k if you need a new one!
Conversely the 3.8 in the 997 is an evolution of the 3.4 & 3.6 lumps from the 996 and will be prone to RMS just as they were.
The 997 GT3 is reported to have the 3.6 from the previous generation in it, although that might give porsche marketing problems as getting more power from it won't be easy. The 997 cup car only makes 400 bhp itself which is up 10 bhp from the 996 cup according to autocar today, and thats fully race tuned...

I think that it would be a great car, but without the 4WD. Not sure about the PCCB either.
More involving to drive than a 4WD turbo and in real terms very neally as quick on the road and probably quicker on the track.
I'm tempted. Anybody else?

...please reread my post, I'm querying that as the 997S is already a 3.8, there's presumably no capacity increase with the power pack, unlike the 993 which went to 3.8, same as the RS. Not sure the same was true for the post facelift 996 power pack.

I've reread your post and it still isn't specific and hasn't magically become better written.
Why you are equating your aircooled car with a 997 I have no idea. I hope you enjoy your dry sump, which contrary to your suggestion isn't a common feature on a road car. Nor are titanium con rods & light weight valves. You can be certain that the X51 pack won't be retrofitting a dry sump to the engine.
Having nearly bought a Mk1 GT3 a couple of years ago and having owned 911s for a while now, I didn't need the lecture on the differences. Nor on dry sumps that are very common on 911s up until the 996, despite what you say.

I've just checked the thread title and it doesn't ask specifically whats in the power pack so I still don't see where you are coming from. You did however compare the X51 to the GT3.
Anyway I don't want to continue bickering with an internet tough guy so we'll leave it here shall we.
