Hi,

Looking some advice from the esteemed chaps on this forum on getting a GT3 allocation, or whether I'm totally wasting my time. I'm from the UK originally and currently living in the US, but returning later this year. I'm completely sold on the 992 GT3, but have fairly swiftly realized how hard they are to get hold of. Having been in the US for some time now, I've had no chance to build up any kind of relationship with a UK dealer.

So with that in mind, am I wasting my time trying to find a GT3 allocation in the UK at this point? The alternative feels like a wait until the pricing calms down on the secondary market, which currently seems crazy.

Over here in the US the dealers charge "ADM" (Additional dealer markup) to secure vehicles, but I don't recall this being a thing in the UK. While I'm not a fan of it, if it's an option for getting a vehicle for less than the secondary market (60-100k over retail) then I could be interested.

Cheers

They don’t have an ADM system here, cars get allocated by the dealers and I suspect you will struggle to get an allocation. The used market is probably your best bet which may not be too bad as the premium seems to be falling. This sold recently for 40-50k over list.

A lot of people in the UK pay ADM in other ways….buying new cars, buying used cars, trading back in cars at prices substantially below what they’re worth in the open market.

Dealers will have a list of people which they know are getting a GT3 allocation and probably have a very good idea of how many cars they will get this year even if they don’t know exactly when. Your chances of getting a car at list from an OPC are slim to none OPC….it does happen but you would have to be extraordinarily lucky.

Realistically you'd been looking at the used market which is why used values are so high relative to list prices.

However another option is to look at LHD cars from the EU. Used GT3 valuations are quite a bit lower there, so even by the time you import a car and pay import taxes you might save and you'd be fishing from a bigger pool of cars. Or you could import from the USA if you have relationships from that market? While LHD is a pain in UK car parks and for visibility around country lanes in the UK, if you plan to use the car much on European road trips or track days in Europe then it could actually prove quite useful. Depends on what you have planned with the car.

Personally I'd prefer a 991.2 GT3 Touring over an of the 992 GT3s anyways. So that automatically puts me in the used market. (See Harry's Garage review for an understanding why... essentially Porsche emphasised the track ability a bit further than previous generations at the cost of compromising the road ability. But this "Nordschleife lap" focus might be what you are after).

The comments in the Harry's garage video has been discussed at length, with excessive tyre pressures being identified as the most likely cause.

Whilst it would appear to be the case that track capability has been favoured relative to on road ability (compared to other generations), actual owners with actual experience don't see this as significant (based on comments here).

OP, it's not quite as clear cut as "ships's sailed and I'll never get one.."

Dealers don't see the total production volumes which are planned, and they only see their own allocation a couple of months ahead, so for oversubscribed models they will play it safe, until such time they realise there's a lot more cars available than they thought.

The best thing you can do is go and have a genuine conversation in person with your preferred Centre, and put a deposit down. The cars are not technically limited, and they will take a deposit on it, then it's just hoping they get enough allocation...

If you get a very strong brush off then be prepared to approach another 1-2 dealers in the same way.

Unfortunately, the other way that sometimes these things get allocated by some centres is based on an agreement of them buying it back off you after 12 months at list price. If that sits well with you you could always explore that avenue...

The used car market at the moment is doubly inflated which doesn't help - 992 GT3 is still very fresh, and the general used car value increase has meant a big inflation.

In the UK it should be called the "Loyalty Penalty".

OPC Chester has a build for March which they offered me last week, I declined cos the 'unspoken handshake ' was taking the piss. That build slot may still be available..

I'm 99% certain that car was for sale on AutoTrader for ages at 230k, then appeared to be sold on CC (for 200k) and now an identical car at the original location is up for 260k...

I recall a salesman at Porsche Leicester said I could order a new GT4 on the condition I purchased the £130k Panamera Turbo they had sitting in the showroom- when I made it clear he could do one he replied ‘ look, I’m just trying to help you get into a GT4’

Thanks folks. This inspired a few fragments of hope! Going to do the rounds in person with some dealers when I visit next. Outside of that, will keep my eyes on previous gens on the secondary market.
