for those considering buying a Porsche pre 2006 and whom live in London, then best to consider this new news today......

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2022/03/04/sa...

...still in planning stage but probably an inevitable outcome.

Why is 2006 relevant?

I've was told by Porsche UK all their cars from 1999 were ULEZ compliant.

Push back against this net zero insanity will only increase as its effects start to bite and the real cost starts to emerge. Khan is already rowing against the tide now I think.

How long has Khan got to go?

Khan is the Lord Mayor of London, not greater London. How does he have the power to even think about extending the ULEZ out to the M25

The Mayor of London is the chief executive of the Greater London Authority, so unfortunately it is within Sadiq Khan's powers to expand the ULEZ zone to the whole of Greater London.

Think it's more a question of when, not if.

TBH I can suck it up on the 6-7 times I use the car a month, but I really feel for nurses and others in similarly low paid but essential occupations that need their car to travel to work every day in London.

Know I'm generalising, but it's mainly wealthy people who can afford EVs, whilst the lower paid have older ICE vehicles - so this is essentially a tax on the poor for the greater good.

Something like an old Aygo is compliant and is probably the cheapest form of motoring out there.

I've got a 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX that is compliant. Cheap as chips motoring as I bought it 15 years ago for £10k so depreciation is minimal.

Most of the small older petrol cars are ULEZ compliant - it's the stty older diesels that will be caught by ULEZ.

Ah. Thought more older cars weren't compliant. Glad everyone will have affordable options.

Current ULEZ needs:
  • Euro 4 for Petrol - became mandatory for all new cars in 2005
  • Euro 6 for Diesel - became mandatory for all new cars in 2015
I bought my Porsche because of the ULEZ as it was EUR 5 petrol and I had a EUR 4 diesel. I had to replace my car when otherwise I wouldn't have bothered, this is why it is necessary to have the regulation applying to everyone. The diesel car really was terrible for emissions. I appreciate this is more difficult for people who are not going to buy a Porsche (!) but a 17y old petrol car is currently sufficient; electric/hybrid is not necessary to meet ULEZ.

Khan is rectifying a historical problem, which was the widespread introduction of diesel, making our cities terrible for particulate pollution. What I want is for somebody to be made to take responsibility for the introduction of diesel for private cars / taxis in the first place. Demonising Khan is anger directed in the wrong place. The decision to promote diesel resulted in a huge waste of money now, decrease in health and increase in CO2 emissions from manufacturing through otherwise unnecessarily replacing cars.

.... and it's amazing how many stty old diesel owners think their cars are 'cleaner' than equivalent petrol versions, just because of the claimed (dieselgate?) lower CO2 emissions used for tax purposes.

This is interesting read if you are...interested.

Article summary said:
This article rightly sums up the outlook that new, well maintained diesel vehicles have quite similar levels of particulate emissions to petrol cars, although they are still higher. However, most vehicle fleets are dominated by the older and considerably more polluting, earlier emission standard vehicles. It will take many years for these vehicles to make their way out of operation. During this time, human health will continue to be damaged by diesel emissions.

I think this has gone to ridiculous levels of expense now both for retailer and motorist and people driving for a living, our cars nowadays are so much cleaner than years ago no slack is cut for the motorist ever, letting people like Kahn affect peoples life choices and aspirations and breaking their dreams wont end well, what is there to work for ? How can people afford these draconian charges to own for instance a Porsche in London ? I get the message but this is way too hardcore now its monumental amounts of money, he must go. He will bankrupt all around him.

Agree 100%. 'Net Zero' is unworkable and is only going to become more and more unpopular as its effects start to bite.

Am still astounded London voted that idiot Khan back in again to be fair.

Motoring enthusiasts are a minority, albeit a decent sized minority. Most people just want a nice car that does the job. The forecast ban on ICE will likely be pushed out but down-sizing is already happening and I wouldn't be surprised if the sale of new cars with larger capacity engines is banned in the coming years. I mean anything over 2L boxedin

Enjoy them while you can.
